Fortnite World Cup with $30M prize pool to be conducted in July

Fortnite is undoubtedly the biggest game in this world. In the wake of the recent success of the newest entry to the battle royale genre: Apex Legends, The Verge reported that the Fortnite concurrent player base hit a record high of 7.6 million players on Feb 16, 2019 on a normal non-event day.

The game has a thriving competitive scene as well with numerous tournaments being held around the world over the course of the past year. Millions of dollars were given out as prize money in these tournaments.

Epic Games, in an announcement on their official site confirmed that the highly anticipated Fortnite World Cup will be happening on July 26-28 and a lot of money will be up for grabs. The prize pool for this three day tournament is $30 million. This is higher than the $25.5 million given out in last year's edition of The International- the biggest Dota 2 tournament. Thus, Fortnite will now become the video game with the biggest prize pool in eSports history, ever.

The road to the world cup will begin on April 13 and will go on till June 16. Each of these weeks will be having a prize pool of $1 million and the top 100 solo players and 50 duos team will be selected for the World Cup. The Cup will be held somewhere in New York which will be having the humongous prize pool of $30 million. Each of the players is guaranteed $50K with the solo champion walking away with $3 million.

The online qualifiers which will be starting from mid-April can be joined by all eligible players. The eligibility for the same according to the official Fortnite site is-

To be eligible to participate in any Fortnite competition, a player must be at least 13 years old (or such other age, of greater, as may be required in such player’s country of residence). Players between the ages of 13 and 17 (or such other age, if greater, as may be required in such player’s country of residence) must have permission from a parent or legal guardian. Players must be in good standing with respect to any Epic accounts registered by said player, with no undisclosed violations. Players must also be free of or served fully any penalties from previously breaking any official Epic rules. The event is void wherever restricted or prohibited by law. Additional eligibility terms and conditions apply.

The announcement also stated that there will be a $100 million dollar total prize pool for the 2019 competitive season. In addition to the intense competition we will see this summer on the road to the Fortnite World Cup, the Fortnite team stated that "many additional events at the Fortnite World Cup Finals featuring fun custom challenges in different modes and formats will be conducted as well".
