Pokemon Go: New Lunar Year Event With Bonuses & More

Pokémon GO

With the Chinese Lunar New Year kicking off today (5 February), there have been many different game events both in games as well as different sales. Pokemon Go is one of them and has kicked off its own Lunar New Year Event yesterday, 4 February. The in-game event will last till February 13.

To match with the theme of the Year of the Pig, Pokemon that represent the Chinese Zodiac have increased chances of popping up. These Pokemon are Rattata, Ekans, Mankey, Ponyta, Electabuzz, Dratini, Mareep, Miltank, Torchic, Poochyena, Spoink, and Buneary. Since it's the Year of the Pig, there will also be a higher choice of encountering a Shiny of psychic type Spoink.

Players will also get double XP when they catch a Pokemon. They will also get double XP for evolving a Pokemon during this period. When players trade Pokemon, they will have an increased chance of having those Pokemon become Lucky (Lucky Pokemon is a rare type of Pokemon such as Alolan and Shiny, which will allow the amount of Stardust spent on them to be reduced by 50%.

This is the second update that Niantic has made this week. In the previous update, there were multiple Sinnoh region Pokemon that were added. The update also featured a Raid against legendary Pokemon Palkia, who is the mascot of Gen 4's Pokemon Pearl. The only Gen 4 Pokemon to be featured in the Lunar New Year event is Buneary.

So if you want to go and level your Pokemon, gain XP, need the Pokemon in the list above or if you're feeling lucky, you might want to play to reap these benefits. There are no changes or bonuses for Stardust, Star Pieces, Rare Candy or any other items in the game.
