Masker reveals that the games client size will probably be around 100 GB

It looks like Cloud Imperium’s upcoming title, Star Citizen, is going to be a massive game in terms of file size. Director of game operations, Jeremy Masker, has confirmed that the game will be very huge, though he has warned fans that it may be a lot more massive than they expect. So those of you who are running low on space might have to think about upgrading.

Masker revealed the games file size in his response to a user on the Roberts Space Industries forum. The user in question had speculated that the game’s final client size would be around 30-40 GB as he felt it will be "significantly more compressed and optimized" that the current version. He added that patches might also be optimized.

Masker then corrected the user with his response:

"As I have already said, I would not count on this," he said."The game compression and asset removal is unlikely to yield such high gains that we will be able to reduce our client size to 30-40GB. The size and number of assets that are left to deliver means that our client size is much more likely to be 100GB."

"Also, yes we are optimizing game patching for speed and to only deliver diffs, but this is unlikely to reduce actual patch size. Again, each patch has 100s of assets, each of these assets are at times 200mb, this leads to 2-6gb patches, and if we end up doing a file type re-factor and have to re-download 30-40% of the assets on the hard-drive, then the patch will be 14-20gb."

This is going to be a major problem for users who have a slow or limited internet connect. Also those running low on hard disk space will have to think of either clearing some files or upgrading.

Star Citizen is slated to release sometime in 2016 for the PC, and Linux. You can check out the games first person module details here.
