Calcutta Football League: East Bengal beat Kalighat MS in a seven goal thriller

Abinash Ruidas scored a screamer to win the match for East Bengal

East Bengal maintained their undefeated run in the Calcutta Football League (CFL) after defeating Kalighat MS in a thrilling seven-goal match. After the victory, the team are at the top of the league with 22 points from eight matches, in which they have won seven times and drawn once.

The Red and Golds were on the verge of defeat, before making a brilliant comeback in the second half of the match. While they initially trailed by two goals in the first half, the team went on to win the game after Abinash Ruidas scored the winner in the 82nd minute.

Kalighat MS were running the game for the majority of the first half, and Nigerian striker Christopher Chizoba was the star player for Kalighat as he helped the team score two goals in the first half. His first goal came in the second minute of the game where he capitalized on a mistake made by the defender, but his second goal was even more spectacular.

East Bengal’s manager Biswajit Bhattacharya got the situation under control by pulling Bello Rasaq out and replacing him with Ranti Martins in the 38th minute. This change ensured that no more goals went in until the half time whistle was blown.

East Bengal start their attack

Soon after the second half began Ranti Martins got on the score sheet after scoring a goal in the 48th minute. Martins scored a superb volley that was fed to him by Dong Hyun Do. After scoring their first goal Bhattacharya's men were playing better than what they had been doing in the starting 45 minutes. Rahul Bheke also got on East Bengal's score sheet after scoring the equalizing goal by heading the ball into the net.

Dong Hyun Do made another important contribution to the team when he scored a goal in the 69th minute, which took the team ahead for the first time in the game. The player made it seem as though the defense was not existent as he rolled the ball past the goalkeeper into the net.

Kalighat had not given up as moments later Kallol Pal scored a spectacular goal where he sent a screamer past East Bengal’s goalkeeper in the 73rd minute. While it seemed like the game was set to finish in a draw, Abinash Ruidas of East Bengal unleashed the best strike of the match when he sent the ball blazing from 35-yards out into the goal in the back of the net in the 82nd minute. The goal was compared by some to Ashim Moulik's strike vs Hyderabad XI in 1965 IFA Shield.

While the game mostly went without any intricacies Gurwinder Singh of East Bengal and Christopher of Kalighat MS were the only players to be booked.

East Bengal will now play Mohun Bagan in the last game of the CFL.
