Champions East Bengal Club were beaten 1-0 by archrivals Mohun Bagan AC in the final game of the 2013/14 CFL Premier Division – Super 12 at the Saltlake Stadium on Saturday evening. Japanese recruit Katsumi Yusa scored a late winner for the Mariners.
Tonights result had no consequence on the CFL’s final outcome as the red-and-golds had already emerged champions, but a derby is a derby and Mohun Bagan fans will be rejoicing after their first derby victory in two years.
East Bengal Club finished with 28 points from 11 matches, three points clear of Mohun Bagan AC who finished runners-up with 25 points.
In today’s match Mohun Bagan dominated the first half and missed a number of easy chances, while keeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu excelled and brought of a string of good saves to deny his opponents. During this session Chidi Edeh had the mortification to see his header strike the upright while Ryuji Sueoka‘s shot of the rebound was scrambled away by Souvik Ghosh.
The roles were reversed in the second half as East Bengal completely dominated the exchanges and missed a number of sitters. This time around Mohun Bagan custodian Shilton Paul denied the rampaging East Bengal forwards to earn the Man of the Match award.
Then in the 84th minute substitute Katsumi Yusa scored the all important winner for the Mariners of a counter attack and it would remain that way until the end.
