East Bengal smash four past Mohun Bagan to win 6th consecutive Calcutta Football League

Do Dong scored a brace as East Bengal thrashed Mohun Bagan 4-0 in the Kolkata derby

East Bengal beat cross-city rivals Mohun Bagan 4-0 in the Kolkata derby to win the Calcutta Football League. Do Dong scored a brace while Rafique and Rahul scored a goal apiece to earn the bragging rights for their fans

East Bengal needed just one point from the match to secure their sixth Calcutta League title in a row and they made their intentions clear early on in the game. The man of the moment Do Dong curled a free kick from almost 30 yards past a hapless Shilton. The latter could have done better with the free kick as the ball did not have any pace on it.

Bagan had the opportunity to level the tie, but Dudu scuffed his lines. The former East Bengal striker picked up a yellow card in the 20th minute and that would prove as a very important decision come the end of the match.

The Mariners kept pushing for an equalizer as Lalkamal Bhowmik and Judelin came close with the former shooting just over the bar while the latter stuck his shot straight at the keeper. On the other end, Lalkamal received a booking for bringing down Rafique.

After seeing off Bagan’s revival Do Dong, who had to live off scraps since his goal, was at it again when he stepped up to take a free-kick from a similar angle to the first one. The result was exactly the same as the young South Korean curled another beautiful free kick past Shilton.

Bagan again tried to get something out of the first half, but Dudu took too long a counter attack and the opportunity was missed. As the teams headed into the break, East Bengal looked like they had everything under control and one hand on the CFL trophy. Even though Bagan dominated the first half ball possession with 57%, they did not look like scoring in the first half.

As the teams came out for the second half, Bagan manager Sanjoy Sen made a double change as Katsumi Yusa and Safar Sardar came on for Azharuddin and Judelin. The Mohun Bagan fans looked more optimistic at the sight of Yusa, a player who was instrumental in their I-League win last season.

Dude sent off early in the second half

Katsumi Yusa looked dangerous as he ran at the defenders before he was brought down by a Mehtab Hossain challenge with the latter receiving a yellow card for the challenge. Five minutes into the second half Bagan’s chances of revival took a big hit as Dudu brought down Khabra. The referee had no option but to issue a second yellow and send the Nigerian off with 40 minutes left on the clock.

Following the red card, the game started to turn ugly as both sets of players were going into tackles they could not win. With a two-goal lead and an extra man on the pitch, East Bengal made their first change as Mehtab Hossain was replaced by Shylo Malswamtluanga in the 60th minute.

Shilton was having a howler as he miss judged a cross and Jairu directed the ball goalwards, but second half substitute Sardar cleared the ball off the line to keep the score at 2-0. Yusa had the chance on the other end of the field but was unable to keep his header on target.

Rafique adds to Bagan’s woes

As the game entered the final ten minutes, the Bagan players were looking tired after playing with ten men for the majority of the second half. East Bengal made sure they put the game out of Bagan’s reach as Rafique headed in a Mama’s inch perfect cross.

In the 87st minute, Ranti Martins came on in place of Man of the Match Do Dong, who was greeted with a raucous applause from the Red and Gold side of the 75,000 strong crowd. As the game entered into extra time Rahul inflicted further insult to the score line with a commanding header to make the score 4-0.

At the end of the match, East Bengal not only won the bragging rights of the match but also won the CFL for a record sixth consecutive time.
