I-League 2017/18: East Bengal to miss the services of Al-Amna for the crucial Minerva Punjab tie

Mahmoud Amna has been the main architect in the midfield for the Kolkata

After a disappointing loss in the Kolkata Derby earlier this month, the Red and Gold brigade would be eager to grab three points in their next encounter against League leaders Minerva Punjab FC. But their main livewire in the midfield Mahmoud Amna won’t be playing in the all-important clash on Tuesday afternoon.

East Bengal were on the track for a possible maiden I-League, but losing points in the last three fixtures have now made things more difficult for them than ever before. With Minerva Punjab FC increasing their lead from other teams at the top of the table, it will be difficult for any team to make up the points. But, East Bengal still have two matches to play against the Punjab based team, and the fixtures could well decide the fate of the I-League.

East Bengal head coach Khalid Jamil confirmed Al Amna's unavailability on the eve of the match, which could turn out to be a potential title decider.

“Al-Amna won’t be playing tomorrow. He is not there, but whoever replaces him will have to give his best,” said Khalid Jamil during the pre-match conference. Al-Amna got injured within the first two minutes of their fixture against arch-rivals Mohun Bagan. Since then, he has never recovered.

The Kolkata giants are currently at the third spot with 19 points from 11 matches. A win will take them to the second spot only behind Minerva Punjab. It will not only change the standings but will also close the gap between the top two teams. East Bengal will again play Minerva Punjab FC on February 8, which will further decide which city the I-League is headed towards.

Minerva Punjab have been the surprise package of the tournament, much like what Aizawl FC did last season. But time will tell whether they can keep up the momentum and clinch their maiden I-League title. East Bengal are the team which can halt their dream run, that’s what will make their tie more exciting and one of the most entertaining this season.
