East Bengal were held to a 2-2 draw by Aizawl FC at the Salt Lake Stadium

What's the story?

East Bengal coach Khalid Jamil feels that the "lack of concentration" cost them 2 points in their opening tie against Aizawl FC as they couldn't hold on to a 2-goal lead and conceded the equaliser in the 94th minute.

A moderate crowd gathered at the Salt Lake Stadium to witness the season opener for both the sides, the passionate East Bengal supporters who paid a visit to watch their favourite team win on a chilly Kolkata night were disappointed as they were held to a 2-2 draw in the I-League against defending champions Aizawl FC.

In case you didn't know...

The home team got the lead by virtue of a 65th-minute header from Brazilian defender Eduardo Ferriera, followed by a goal from Japanese recruit Katsumi Yusa in the 72nd minute. The visitors pulled one back on the 74th minute with William Lallnunfela and completing his brace in the dying seconds of the match to secure a vital away point.

The heart of the matter

East Bengal's lost the plot in the last 15 minutes and gave away 2 points to the away team Aizawl FC. Regarding their performance following the second goal, coach Khalid Jamil said,"Lack of concentration in the play and also in the set-piece movements was the main reason for this result."

"Bad defending, everyone made mistakes, we conceded goals from a corner and a wide free kick. Everyone tried, but they have to play better the next time," said Khalid when asked why East Bengal conceded goals from set-piece movements.

What's next?

East Bengal will be more than happy with their performance, especially a few days ahead of their clash against Mohun Bagan this coming Sunday. Apart from a few mistakes in defence, the ‘Red and Gold’ brigade did their work to perfection. If they can mend their flaws in the future, they have a bright prospect of claiming their first ever I-League title.

Author's take

The Kolkata giants are yet to settle down as a team, with many new players this season. A couple of matches are required to get the right balance and play effective football. However, the Katsumi-Amna duo showed what they are capable of creating magic on the field.
