What's the story?

The war of words between arch rivals Mohun Bagan and East Bengal began as Mohun Bagan prepare to face Neroca in the I-League 2017. Mohun Bagan AC coach, Sanjoy Sen was upset as his team's style of play has been criticized. The Mariners have two draws in four games so far, with the draws coming against Minerva FC and Shillong Lajong.

In case you didn't know...

Sanjoy Sen joined Mohun Bagan AC on 8th November, 2014 and won the I-League with the club in his inaugural season. It was the first time in 13 years that the club had won the trophy after winning it last in 2001-02.

The heart of the matter

Mohun Bagan FC, sitting second in the table behind Minerva FC, have been criticised a lot in the media as they prepare for their game versus Neroca FC. Mohun Bagan coach Sanjoy Sen was displeased at the criticism that his team has been receiving.

In a scathing reply to the people calling Mohun Bagan out, he said that, “We played four matches and just conceded two goals. Those who are criticizing us must watch the goal tally of East Bengal and other teams. We conceded lesser goals in last three years.”

Directly aiming at arch rivals East Bengal, coach Sen also went on to say that, “Some people are trying to divide us but it’s not so easy. East Bengal conceded six goals playing same number of matches.”

What's next?

Mohun Bagan FC take on high flying Neroca FC, who won their last game against Chennai City FC in a dramatic fashion. Coach Sanjoy Sen will not take Neroca lightly and he made it clear in his press conference when he said, "Neroca can be very dangerous as they have Gobind Singh, Subhash Singh in their squad."

Mohun Bagan FC will miss Sony Norde, who is out due to an injury. Ansumana Kromah is expected to play a part in the game on Tuesday, although there have been reports of him being injured as well.

Author's take

Having conceded only two goals this season as compared to East Bengal's six, it is fair for coach Sanjoy Sen to be upset over the critics, who are singling out his team. He can further prove a point if Mohun Bagan can win convincingly against Neroca without some of their key players. This is a also a crucial match for Mohun Bagan as they would not like the points gap up top to widen.
