What's the story?

Mohun Bagan have officially completed the signing of Cameron Watson to replace Diogo Ferreira, who was released by the club a few days ago after he failed to recover from an injury he suffered during the side's pre-season preparations.

In case you didn't know

Watson was a key part of Albert Roca's Bengaluru FC side in the 2016 edition of the I-League and made 16 appearances for the Blues. He also played a crucial role in Bengaluru FC's Federation Cup-winning campaign last year. However, he was released when the team opted to join the Indian Super League.

The Australian started his career at Portugal with Porto, where he made his mark at the youth level, before shifting his loyalties to VVV Venlo in the Eredivise. The best spell of his career came in the A-League with Adelaide United where he made over 100 appearances from 2011-2015.

Heart of the matter

The midfielder is expected to join the squad soon and will fill the sixth and final spot, left vacant by the outgoing Ferreira, in the quota for overseas players at the club. Sanjoy Sen's side has been plagued by a lot of injuries in recent weeks with all of Sony Norde, Yuta Kinowaki and Ansumana Kromah currently sidelined.

A defensive midfielder by trade, Watson will provide the steel in midfield for the Green and Maroon Brigade as they prepare themselves to regain the I-League title.

What next?

Mohun Bagan take on Neroca FC in their next game in the I-League tomorrow but Watson is not likely to be available for the game. However, the Mohun Bagan faithful will be hoping to see him in action against Churchill Brothers.'

Author's take

A player of Watson's ability will be a huge boost to the title credentials of Mohun Bagan this season and his experience of being a part of the largely successful Bengaluru FC side will only help them in their quest for the same.
