East Bengal's star forward Jobby Justin is set to miss a large part of the Super Cup for the Red and Golds after being handed a six-match suspension for spitting at an opponent.

The All India Football Federation's (AIFF) Disciplinary Committee handed out the suspension to Jobby and fined him Rs 1 lakh for spitting at Aizawl FC's Kareem Omolaja during their I-League match on February 25.

Kareem also received the same sanction from the AIFF DC.

Around the 70th minute, Kareem committed a foul on Jobby and the duo got into a scuffle on the pitch. The match official sent Kareem off but did not notice Jobby spitting at his opponent.

Aizawl, upset that only their player was penalised, appealed the decision after the match and after reviewing video evidence, the AIFF handed Jobby an interim suspension.

Now that he's out for 6 matches, he can only appear in the Super Cup final for East Bengal if the club makes it that far.

Jobby missed East Bengal's crucial games against Real Kashmir and Minerva Punjab last week. He's sure to miss East Bengal's last I-League match against Gokulam Kerala on March 9.

In a stern sanction, the AIFF DC also suspended Gokulam Kerala midfielder Guilherme Batata for a year for clashing with a referee.

During the Shillong Lajong v Gokulam Kerala match on February 22, Batata is said to have misbehaved with the referee, causing him to be banned for a year, which is usually reserved for spitting at the referee.

According to Article 50 of the AIFF Disciplinary Code, For Misconduct against Match officials, "1. Including the automatic suspension incurred, the overall suspension imposed on any person receiving a direct red card shall be for: c) at least 12 months for spitting at a match official."

Even Jobby's infringement is a serious offence, which resulted in the six-match ban.
