What’s the story?

East Bengal head coach Khalid Jamil has been sacked by the club authorities after just one year into his stint at the club. Following a streak of upsets and below par performances from the Red and Golds, the club has decided to part ways with the manager.

In case you didn’t know…

After having won the I-League while his time at Aizawl FC, Jamil joined East Bengal in 2017, following his success at the Mizoram based club. The 40-year-old signed a record deal worth Rs. 1.25 crore, which made him the highest earning coach in Indian top tier league.

Jamil was also recently involved in a feud with the club’s technical director, Subhash Bhowmick, wherein the latter refused to work with the head coach – following the disappointment in the Indian Super Cup final versus Bengaluru FC.

The heart of the matter

After Khalid’s departure from East Bengal, Subhash Bhowmick is set to continue as the technical director at the club. Bhowmick is said to have had a significant say in the new appointment, as club secretary revealed that the technical director was given the responsibility for the same.

Khalid Jamil had led East Bengal to a failed title race in the I-League, where the finished fourth after being in contention for the league trophy throughout the season. To add to that, he had also led the Red and Golds to the final of the Super Cup, where they finished as the runners-up.

What’s next?

After yet another season without a trophy in the national level, it will be interesting to see who East Bengal bring in, as a replacement for Jamil. The Red and Golds' first task will be to win the Calcutta Football League, a title that they have won eight years in a row.

Author’s take

Subhash Bhowmick seems to have a huge influence on calling the shots at East Bengal. It will be interesting for the fans to how the club takes forward its operations in the future.
