Indian Super Cup 2018: Mohun Bagan players survive freak bus accident
What's the story?
The bus carrying Mohun Bagan players met with an accident on Saturday morning in Bhubaneswar, after a practice session at the Kalinga Stadium.
In case you didn't know...
Mohun Bagan finished third in this season's I-League behind champions Minerva Punjab FC and promoted side NEROCA FC thus securing their automatic spot in the Super Cup 2018. The Mariners will take on fellow I-League club Churchill Brothers in the Round of 16 fixtures in Bhubaneshwar.
The heart of the matter
Mohun Bagan players survived a bus mishap on Saturday morning, as the team bus caught fire due to a malfunction.
The bus was carrying the players after the practice session at the Kalinga Stadium ahead of the Super Cup match with Churchill Brothers on Sunday. On the way back to the team hotel, the air conditioning system inside the bus got blown up and caught fire.
The players reacted quickly and evacuated the bus and nobody was hurt during the chaos caused by the fire. The incident took place around 11-11:30 am today morning.
When contacted by Sportskeeda, Mohun Bagan team manager Sanjay Ghosh said, "Yes, there was a bit of an accident with the bus this morning. The AC inside the bus blew up and caught fire. Thankfully, nobody was hurt. We shifted all the players and officials to another bus."
The tournament organizers arranged for another bus for the Mariners and the team was safely escorted to the team hotel.
Mohun Bagan will face Goan club Churchill Brothers tomorrow evening at the Kalinga Stadium in their first match in the Super Cup 2018.
Incidents like this can cause an adverse effect on the team morale but it is a huge relief that none of the players were hurt.
