BFC's Chhetri in action versus Mohun Bagan

What’s the story?

Mohun Bagan head coach Sankarlal Chakraborty regarded his team’s semifinal contest against Bengaluru FC as important as the Kolkata derby, ahead of their crunch fixture at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar on Tuesday.

In case you didn’t know…

On the last five occasions that the two giants locked horns, BFC have won only once (AFC Cup in 2017), drawn twice and been overshadowed by Mohun Bagan twice. While the statistics may favour the team from Kolkata, Bengaluru's frontline must not be taken lightly.

Even though these old foes partake in two different leagues now, they are both top contenders in their respective competitions and will be determined to book a place in the finale against East Bengal.

The heart of the matter

During the pre-match press conference, Mariners’ coach Sankar Lal Chakraborty equated his team’s clash against BFC as the next best thing to Kolkata derby.

"I will never forget the Federation Cup final last year where they dominated out and out. We also had a very good team but we lost 2-0. (Albert) Roca is a great coach. He changes his formation several times. So it is very difficult for us. All over the world, one player can win one or two matches but team game will win you the championship," the coach added.

"In India, Bengaluru FC have one of the best infrastructures and are a well-prepared team. But we are also prepared for the game. Budget, merit, etc. I am not considering that. In the last four-to-five years BFC's performance, quality of players and coaches have been amazing."

What’s next?

Mohun Bagan and Bengaluru FC will take the stage at Kalinga Stadium situated in the city of Bhubaneshwar. The winner of this match will face East Bengal in the finale of the debut season of the Indian Super Cup.

Author’s take

While BFC may not be tipped as the favourites to beat rivals Bagan, this semi-final will sure be one hell of a game. With both teams putting up an equally tough fight and making it more difficult for the other to clinch the victory.
