Interview with Denzil Franco (Churchill Brothers): "We are a 'Team' in every sense of the word"

26 year old Denzil Franco‘s preferred position is right back, and at Churchill Brothers, he has grown to become a Team India player. About his club, the Red Machines, he says that they are a ‘Team’ in every sense of the word.

How does it feel to be on the verge of winning your first-ever I-League title?

I’m containing my excitement until we’ve played Mohun Bagan on the 7th of May. We just need one point to be crowned champions of India. If things go our way, it would be the first ever I-League title in my career.

Has this been the best season of your professional career?

Yes, of course! Winning the 2012 Nehru Cup with the Indian national team to being on the verge of clinching the I-League title 2012/13, it has been a fantastic season for me.

How much have you changed as a player since your time at Salgaocar SC, Mahindra United and now at Churchill Brothers?

I guess its true for anybody that with time comes experience; I have imbibed the best of all the three clubs to obviously be a better player for Churchill Brothers.

What do you think is the best quality of this Churchill Brothers squad?

Undoubtedly, the unity amongst the boys. We are a ‘Team’ in every sense of the word wherein everyone has worked unselfishly in the larger interest of the club.

Which player do you rate as having been your toughest opponent this season?

Honestly, no one in particular, as the boys in the team were pretty much reaching out to each other on the field in difficult situations.

Finally, would you like to say anything to your fans out there?

I would like to call on all our football fans in Goa to come and support us on the 7th of May when we take on Mohun Bagan at 6.30pm at the Tilak Maidan in Vasco. We would require your support to help us keep the I-League trophy in Goa!
