Bengaluru FC suffered their first defeat of the ISL 2017 season at the hands of FC Goa in a match that ended 4-3 in favour of the Gaurs. It was a real thriller, with both sides giving it their all straight from kick off, which also resulted in a number of controversial situations and heated moments on the pitch.
Both sides shared an incredible seven goals, four of which came in the second half, but the turning point of the match came in the 36th minute after Bengaluru FC's goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh was given a straight red card for a shove on Goa's Manuel Lanzarote.
The ruckus began when Gurpreet was forced to rush out of goal due to a poor backpass as Lanzarote came charging at him. The keeper was first to the ball and had passed it to the defender but the striker harried him even after the ball had been played.
Gurpreet then lost his cool and swung his right arm at the forward, which touched his head. The contact was not much but Lanzarote made the most of the situation and tumbled to the ground clutching his face as the referee reacted quickly and gave a straight red to the Indian.
Questions remained about the accuracy of the decision as the striker was certainly quick to fall to the ground in a theatrical manner. The Bengaluru FC players, including Sunil Chhetri, surrounded the referee immediately, asking for Lanzarote to be sent off as well, but it was to no avail.
The foul also resulted in a penalty, which substitute keeper Abhra Mondal could not save and with the goal, the scoreline extended to 3-1 in favour of the Goans.
Down to 10 men, the Blues fought hard in the second half and thanks to goals from Erik Paartalu and Miku in the 57th and 60th minutes respectively, they levelled the scores and pushed for the fourth.
However, it was the home side that had the last laugh as in the 63rd minute, Ferran Corominas scored his third goal of the game, which proved to be the winner as FC Goa held on for the 4-3 win.
