What’s the story?

Struggling club NorthEast United FC are scouring the transfer market for reinforcements after a poor start to their season and had contacted legendary I-League striker Ranti Martins for a possible move back to India. However, the star striker is said to have turned down the offer from the Highlanders.

In case you didn’t know…

Ranti Martins, over the years, has been one of the best strikers in the I-League, having won two National Football League, three I-League, and one Federation Cup titles with Dempo SC. The Nigerian striker has also played a couple of seasons for Kolkata giants East Bengal.

Heart of the matter

NorthEast have been struggling so far this season, and have failed to impress their fans. They are yet to win a game at home this season, and their only win came against bottom club Delhi Dynamos in the national capital.

With coach Joao De Deus being frustrated at the number of chances that are being missed up front, the Highlanders are said to be looking to sign a quality striker in the January transfer window. According to sources, the club is looking for a striker who has had previous experience playing in India.

Ranti Martins completely fits the bill, as the Nigerian has been one of the most prolific strikers in Indian football over the past. Hence, the club had contacted the 31-year-old over a possible move to Guwahati, a NorthEast official revealed to Sportskeeda.

However, Martins, who is currently plying his trade at Eagles Maryland in the American Soccer League in the second tier of US football, is said to be unwilling to make a move away from America at the moment.

What’s next?

NEUFC have now lost three matches on the trot and will be looking to get their season back on track on Saturday when they travel to FC Pune City.

Author’s take

The Highlanders have never made it to the semifinals of the ISL, and that does not look good for a side that boasts of an abundance of talent from the northeastern region of the country. While they have been playing good football, they have been lacking the final finish in front of goal. The club looks to be in the need of a top quality striker at the moment.
