Mohammedan Sporting miss the opportunity of joint top after draw with Southern Samity

Mohammedan Sporting will take on East Bengal in their next match

Mohammedan Sporting missed the opportunity to go level on points with East Bengal at the top of the Calcutta Football League(CFL) after managing just a 1-1 draw with Southern Samity in their fourth match of the 2015 CFL. Sporting are now on 8 points from four games to East Bengal’s 10 from the same number of games.

Sporting got off to a good start with Rana Gharami scoring a wonder goal from almost 35 yards giving Samity keeper Ashok Singh no chance. But the smiles were wiped from their faces just four minutes later when Tauras Manneh equalised for Southern Samity.

Manneh latched on to a loose ball 30 yards from goal and ran straight towards the goal. After going past a defender, Manneh finished the move off with a brilliantly placed shot from the outside of his right boot.

Sporting pushed forward looking for an equaliser, but the Samity defense did well to keep them at bay and hold on to a draw. Gharami was adjudged the man of the match for his exceptional goal.

Sporting had a great chance of going level on points with East Bengal as Samity were fifth on the table having played a game more, but the draw means that they are now third on the table two points behind East Bengal.

Sporting had started their CFL campaign against I-League champions Mohun Bagan, where both teams were satisfied in playing out a goalless draw. In their second game, they picked up their first win of the season in a 2-0 victory over Kalighat Milan Sangha. With another narrow win over Police AC, it looked like their season had well and truly kicked off.

The draw against Samity might not be a problem for the side attempting to win the CFL for the first time since 1981 if they are able to consolidate their position in the next game. The next match for Sporting is against East Bengal on the 23rd of August as the former will try to protect their record of most consecutive CFL wins against a confident East Bengal side. Sporting beat the Kolkata giants 1-0 when the two met in last season’s CFL.
