SAFF Championship 2013: This was India’s best performance of the tournament – Afghanistan’s Arezou

Former Churchill Brothers striker Balal Arezou scored six goals at SAFF 2011 but this year’s SAFF Championship has turned out to be the best tournament of his career as he helped Afghanistan win their first-ever international title.

“I played well two years ago but winning the SAFF Championship this time is the most special moment of my career. This is unbelievable,” he told Sportskeeda after the game.

Arezou though was full of praise for India and claimed that despite the defeat, the six-time record champions produced their best performance of SAFF 2013.

“This was their best performance without a doubt but we took our chances,” he said. Before adding, “Finally we have taken revenge for that loss in 2011.”

Offers from India

Arezou spent half a season with Churchill Brothers in last season’s I-League but returned to play in Norway this summer despite having offers from Indian clubs.

“I had a good time at Churchill Brothers and still miss playing in India. I had an offer from them and Mohammedan Sporting for this season also but I was missing my family back in Norway so I decided to return there,” the star striker revealed.

Arezou still uses a mini Churchill Brothers kitbag and stated that he is still open to a move in India in the winter transfer window if the offer is right.
