Every new edition of the famous FIFA series of the EA Sports brings with it a galore of new updates and plethora of new teams to play with. The latest edition – FIFA 17 – however, brought with it a completely different method to take penalties in the game.

While traditionally, the power bar below player’s name on one of the bottom corners of the screen enabled the user to easily guide the ball into the net with accurate power, the update saw the bar being removed. Instead, the user now changes the run-up of the player to alter his approach towards the ball. Longer run-ups help the users in hitting the spot-kick with more power and vice versa.

Though this new method of taking the penalties has received its fair share of criticism, it

Firstly, the user needs to ensure that he takes the penalty (shoots, not passes) with least possible power. The second trick is to direct the ball on either side of the goal so that one of your teammates, who are stationed on the edge of the box, can run in and slot the ball into the goal.

After taking the shot, the user then has to switch to the nearest player, who then should run in a straight line towards the ball. The user will have to ensure that the selected player reaches the ball before any of the opposition players. Subsequently, he/she should shoot first-time, preferably a powerful shot, and hope the goalkeeper doesn’t save it.

The most complex part here is to assure that the ball is shot with least possible power and as far from the goal as possible.

Messi made the infamous penalty-assist to Suarez last year against Celta Vigo. Barcelona were already 3-1 up, and they were awarded a penalty which the diminutive Argentine stepped up to take. However, to everyone’s surprise, instead of shooting the ball, he tapped it on the side for Suarez to run in and complete his hat-trick.

This was not the first time though that a player attempted a penalty-assist. Johan Cruyff squared it off for teammate Jesper Olsen at Ajax before Robert Pires and Thiery Henry tried to replicate that for Arsenal.
