31st January, 2011. A day every Liverpool fan will remember. A day when a Kop Hero left the club when it needed him the most. Fernando José Torres Sanz, a player the entire Liverpool kingdom used to worship sealed a move to a “bigger club”.
It’s quite evident that he has failed to achieve success in Chelsea as he has scored only 11 goals in 57 matches after joining the West Londoners. A change of club will do a world of good for Torres as Chelsea are already preparing to bring in another striker in the January transfer window. Taking a look back, every football fanatic will be able to remember how important and effective Fernando Torres was in the Liverpool jersey. Liverpool signed Fernando Torres from Athletico Madrid in 2007. The following 4 seasons was crucial for Fernando, as he booked his place in Spain’s starting XI following his excellent run for Liverpool scoring 65 goals in 102 appearances for the Merseysiders. All through these 4 years, Torres proved to be one of the most prolific goalscorers of the modern era.
In the later stages of his Liverpool career, there was prominent dip in form for the Spaniard as he suffered from persistent knee injury. At the beginning of the 2010-11 season, Torres pledged his commitment for Liverpool, which he later failed to keep during the January transfer window. Torres was reportedly sold for 50 million pounds to Chelsea. A fee that seemed too much compared to his performance in the Blue jersey.
As Chelsea are reportedly trying to lure in Radamel Falcao from Athletico Madrid, they would probably offload Torres. But where will Torres be heading? One specific club that might benefit from Torres’s addition is Liverpool. With the club struggling in the bottom half of the table, Brendan Rodgers will definitely look to strengthen his squad. Is Fernando an option for Liverpool? Is Liverpool as option for Fernando? Let alone Torres’s form, the controversial transfer that took place on 31st January, 2012 might have ended any connection between the club and its one time “Kop legend”.
