The 2024 FedEx St. Jude Championship is the next stop on the PGA Tour and with it comes the playoffs. The event brings together the current top 70 in the FedEx Cup standings and the top 50 at the end of this tournament will advance to the next event.

Founded as the Westchester Classic, the FedEx St. Jude Championship has several illustrious players on its list of champions. Below is the list of players who have lifted the trophy in the last 10 editions:

  • 2023 Lucas Glover
  • 2022 Will Zalatoris
  • 2021 Tony Finau
  • 2020 Dustin Johnson
  • 2019 Patrick Reed
  • 2018 Bryson DeChambeau
  • 2017 Dustin Johnson
  • 2016 Patrick Reed
  • 2015 Jason Day
  • 2014 Hunter Mahan

From this list, Will Zalatoris, Tony Finau, and Jason Day will be in the field for the 2024 edition. Besides them, only one other former champion, Adam Scott (who won in 2013), will be present.

Lucas Glover, the defending champion of the FedEx St. Jude Championship, will not be able to defend his title as he did not make it into the top 70 in the FedEx Cup rankings (ranked 76th). Dustin Johnson, Patrick Reed, and Bryson DeChambeau will not be able to compete on the PGA Tour due to their LIV Golf affiliation.

As for Hunter Mahan, he has not played an official tournament since 2021. Mahan was once ranked 4th in the world and won six PGA Tour events between 2007 and 2014.

A look at the history of the FedEx St. Jude Championship

The tournament that is now known as the FedEx St. Jude Championship was founded in 1967 as the Westchester Classic and was played in that same New York town. The first winner was Jack Nicklaus, who repeated his triumph in 1972.

The list of tournament winners includes greats like Arnold Palmer, Johnny Miller, Curtis Strange, Raymond Floyd, Seve Ballesteros and Vijay Singh. Singh is the event's all-time leading winner with four victories.

In addition to Nicklaus and Singh, other multiple winners include Dustin Johnson (3), Ballesteros (2), Ernie Els (2), Sergio Garcia (2) and Patrick Reed (2).

The aggregate and to par records for the event have been held by Johnson since he carded 30 under 254 in 2020. The course record (61) was set by Jay Delsing in 1993 and later matched by Bob Estes in 2001 and Tom Lewis in 2020.

Beginning with the 2007 edition, the FedEx St. Jude Championship became the first stop of the FedEx Cup playoffs. The purse increased significantly over the years and it became one of the most coveted tournaments of the season.

Until the 2022 edition, the field consisted of the top 120 in the FedEx Cup rankings but was reduced to the top 70 as part of the PGA Tour's strategy to increase purses.

The tournament, currently being played at TPC Southwind in Memphis, Tennessee, has a purse of $20 million, with $3.6 million going to the winner. The winner will also receive 2,000 FedEx Cup points.
