Anirban Lahiri set to become first Indian participant in World Golf Challenge

Anirban Lahiri thanked his ‘hero’ Tiger Woods for the initiative

Indian golfer Anirban Lahiri is all set to create another record this year. He will be the first Indian to play in the Professional Golfers Association (PGA) sanctioned prestigious tournament- World Golf Challenge. This tournament which will be held between December 2 and 6 is going to be hosted by the Tiger Woods Foundation.

Last month, 28-year-old Anirban Lahiri became the first Indian to play in Presidents Cup. He emerged victorious at Indian Open and Malayasia Open.Currently ranked at 39, this golfer earned his PGA Tour card for the 2015-16 via the Web.com series.

Talking about this opportunity to play at the coveted World Golf Challenge, Lahiri said, "I'm truly delighted and honoured to receive an invitation to the World Challenge, which is being played in Albany in The Bahamas this year. I want to thank (Hero Motocorp chief) Pawan Munjal who has been a great support, not just for me personally but to sport and golf in India and taking it global,"

Lahiri said, “I would like to thank my hero Tiger Woods and the Tiger Woods Foundation for hosting such a fantastic event for such a great cause. It is going to be quite a challenge and I look forward to coming out and hopefully putting up a strong performance”.

Multiple time Major champion, whose foundation is hosting the event, is glad that international golfers are getting a platform to showcase their talent. “I am grateful for the opportunity to showcase an elite field that, with its international players, represents the success of golf worldwide. I'm looking forward to bringing the World Challenge to a world-class venue in Albany,” said the 39-year-old.

The calendar year 2015 has so far been great for Anirban Lahiri. He has played all four Majors and World Golf Championships this year. The Pune-based golfer finished fifth at the PGA Championship, the best-ever by an Indian golfer. He also won this year’s Hero India Open.

The top ranked 18 golfers of the world will take part in World Golf Challenge. The list includes this year’s Major championships winners Jordan Spieth, Jason Day and Zach Johnson. World No. 2 Spieth will take part in this event for the third time and also is the defending champion.
