Neal Shipley won’t be teeing it up at this week’s U.S. Open after coming up short in the final stage of qualifying. Still, the Mt. Lebanon native returned to familiar ground on Monday, walking the course at Oakmont Country Club, a place that holds special meaning for him.
As a teenager, Shipley worked as a caddie at Oakmont, a role that left him with some of his favourite memories. The Central Catholic alum now hopes his story can motivate young golfers with dreams of turning professional, just as he once had.
Shipley became a recognisable name in 2023, competing as an amateur in both The Masters and the U.S. Open. At Augusta National, he had the rare opportunity to play alongside Tiger Woods, finishing at 12-over-par and earning low amateur honours. He followed that with another impressive showing at the U.S. Open at Pinehurst, finishing 6-over and tying for 26th, again as the low amateur.
This year, Neal Shipley had hoped to qualify for the U.S. Open at Oakmont, which would have marked his first major appearance since last season. That goal slipped away when he posted a 1-over round at Emerald Dunes Golf Club in final qualifying, falling 11 shots shy of the cut line.
Despite the disappointment, Shipley was all smiles Monday morning, mingling with fans, signing autographs, and soaking in the atmosphere at Oakmont.
While back in Pittsburgh, he’ll also participate in several charity events and spend time with family and friends. Looking ahead, his focus turns to the Korn Ferry Tour, where he’s set to compete in the Wichita Open next week at Crestview Country Club. Neal Shipley said:
“For me, the rest of this season will be focusing on the Korn Ferry tour and getting to the top 50 in the world, earning my PGA membership."
A strong showing there would help strengthen Neal Shipley's position and potentially pave the way for future major championship appearances.
