The 2024 edition boasts the largest payout since the inception of the event in 1860. The tournament has continuously increased purses over the last two decades.

In 2000, the purse was $2.75 million, which increased to $4 million by 2004. In 2017, the purse reached double-digit millions for the first time, rising from $6.5 million to $10.2 million. Over the past four years, prize money has shown significant growth, with the purse increasing to $11.5 million in 2021, then $14 million in 2022, and $16.5 million in 2023.

The CEO of R&A, Martin Slumbers, opened up about the tremendous increase in prize money in 2024 while announcing it to the media. He said (via TheOpen.com):

“We remain concerned about the impact substantial increases in men’s professional prize money are having on the perception of the sport and its long-term financial sustainability. We are determined to act with the interests of the global game in mind as we pursue our goal of ensuring golf continues to thrive in 50 years’ time.”
