Phil Mickelson finished tied for fourth at the 2025 LIV Golf Virginia with a total score of 13-under par after three rounds. In the final round, Mickelson shot a 6-under 65. He made seven birdies on holes 2, 5, 9, 10, 12, 17, and 18, and had just one bogey on the par-4 15th.
He started the tournament with a 4-under 67 in the opening round. He carded seven birdies on holes 6, 7, 10, 12, 13, 14, and 18. However, he also made three bogeys on holes 8, 11, and 16.
In the second round, Phil Mickelson shot a 3-under 68. He made birdies on 8, 9, 10, 15, and 17, while dropping two shots with bogeys on the 6th and 7th holes. This strong performance gave him a top-five finish, one of his best results in the 2025 LIV Golf season.
Phil Mickelson is all set for his final attempt to win the career Grand Slam
Phil Mickelson is getting ready for what could be his last chance to complete the career Grand Slam. He will compete at the 2025 U.S. Open, which takes place from June 12-15 at Oakmont Country Club. So far this year, Mickelson has played in seven LIV Golf events and also appeared at the Masters and PGA Championship, where he missed the cuts in both majors.
Mickelson remains eligible for the U.S. Open thanks to his 2021 PGA Championship victory, which granted him a five-year exemption to compete in majors. That exemption expires at the end of this season, making this year’s U.S. Open likely his final opportunity to win the title.
Mickelson has six major titles in his career, but the U.S. Open has always slipped through his fingers. He has finished as runner-up six times but has never won the tournament. When asked ahead of LIV Golf Virginia if this could be his last U.S. Open, Mickelson said:
"There's a high likelihood that it will be, but I haven't really thought about it too much."
He has missed the cut in his last three U.S. Open appearances. Before his 2021 PGA win, he had received a special exemption to play in the U.S. Open, but didn’t need it after his victory. He can still try to qualify through the 36-hole Final Qualifying, though he’s unsure if he will.
"I don't know. I don't know. I haven't thought that far," Mickelson said when asked about qualifying.
Mickelson also pointed out that this week’s LIV event in Virginia served as good preparation for Oakmont.
"What I have thought about is how similar this week's course is set up to what we'll see next week. We have greens that are rolling 14 to 15 on the Stimpmeter, just like we will next week. We have contours, undulations, just like we will next week."
Phil Mickelson currently ranks 15th in the 2025 LIV Golf individual standings and sits at No. 1162 in the Official World Golf Ranking.
