Luke Clanton hilariously blamed Rory McIlroy for a sleeping problem this week. The American golfer, who turned pro earlier this year, is playing at the 2025 RBC Canadian Open. For the first two rounds, Clanton is paired in a group with Rory McIlroy and Ludvig Åberg.
In the post-round press conference of the opening round of the RBC Canadian Open, Luke Clanton was asked by a reporter when he woke up for the game on Thursday. In response, Clanton said, via ASAP Sports:
"Didn't sleep very much."
Clanton blamed 'Tiger Woods of his life', Rory McIlroy, for his unique problem, saying:
"I was playing with Rory (laughter)."
Notably, in the same press conference, Luke Clanton called Rory McIlroy his Tiger Woods when asked about him pairing with the World No. 2. He said:
"Being paired with Rory is no joke. The crowds are amazing. Watching him hit drivers and iron shots, it's cool. I watched him growing up my whole life, so I guess you could say he's like the Tiger Woods of my life, and it's really cool."
However, Luke Clanton had a tough start to his game at the 2025 RBC Canadian Open. He played the opening round even-par 70 to settle in a tie for 96th place. Meanwhile, Rory McIlroy carded 1-over 71 and settled in T119.
Luke Clanton makes an eagle in the opening round of 2025 RBC Canadian Open
Although it was a rough day for Luke Clanton, he was impressive with some shots on the greens in the first round of the 2025 RBC Canadian Open. He teed it up for the first round on the tenth hole and made two back-to-back bogeys on the 11th and 12th.
Clanton added another bogey on the 16th but was impressive on the 18th, as he ended up making an eagle on the hole. On the par-5, 573-yard hole, he managed to get the ball into the tee hole in three shots, settling for an amazing eagle on the hole.
In the post-round press conference, Clanton talked about his eagle, saying, via ASAP Sports:
"The first eight holes were great. I just hit a couple of shots that were a little bit off that kind of penalized me out here, especially par-4s over 500 yards are tough. It was good. To make eagle on 18 in front of the crowd was pretty sweet. A couple of things to work on, and we'll be all right."
Meanwhile, on the back nine, Clanton carded a birdie on the fifth and settled for an even-par 70. Thorbjørn Olesen took the lead in the game after 18 holes in a tie with Cristobal Del Solar at 9-under.
