RBC Canadian Open history
The Royal Montreal Golf Club, established in 1873, hosted the first event in 1904. The golf course hosted the Canadian Open 10 more times, but the event's location varies each year, sometimes in consecutive years. The Rivermead Golf Club, which hosted the competition in 1920, gave the first trophy to the winner. The winner was awarded a gold medal before that. The trophy was known as the Rivermead Challenge Cup from 1920 to 1935 and the Segram Gold Cup from 1936 to 1970. Next came the Du Maurier Trophy from 1971 to 1993. As of June 2025, it is known as the RBC Canadian Open.
From 1936 to 1961 and since 2007, the Rivermead Challenge Cup has been given to the Canadian professional with the lowest score. Tiger Woods (2000) and Lee Trevino (1971) are the only players to win the Open, U.S. Open, and Canadian Open in the same season.
