Super rookie Rose Zhang was one of the top performers for the United States in fourball on day one. She and Megan Khang played one of the closest matches of the afternoon with Gemma Dryburgh and Madelene Sagstrom.

However, American captain Stacy Lewis decided not to field Rose Zhang in foursomes on Saturday. As a result, Zhang will not have the opportunity to make her foursomes debut at this edition of the Solheim Cup.

The pairings, announced by Lewis, were Lilia Vu and Jennifer Kupcho against Emily Kristine Pedersen and Carlota Ciganda. Lexi Thompson and Megan Khang will play Anna Nordqvist and Leona Maguire.

The so-called "team Kor", Nelly Korda and Allisen Corpuz will face Georgia Hall and Celine Boutier. Finally, Danielle Kang and Andrea Lee will take on the Swedish duo of Linn Grant and Maja Stark.

Given Rose Zhang's performance in fourballs on day one, it is expected that she will be given the opportunity to tee off in fourballs again on Saturday afternoon. However, these pairings will not be officially announced until the morning of day two.

The United States opened day one with a historic performance. The US won all four foursomes matches. In the afternoon, they could only manage two halves, the aforementioned Zhang and Khang, and Jennifer Kupcho and Allisen Corpuz against Emily Kristine Pedersen and Maja Stark.

In the other two matches of the afternoon, Lexi Thompson and Lilia Vu lost 1-up to Leona Maguire and Georgia Hall. Angel Yin and Ally Ewing were defeated 4&2 by Carlota Ciganda and Linn Grant.

The American team leads the 2023 Solheim Cup by five points to three after the first day.

How was Rose Zhang's Solheim Cup debut?

The 2023 Solheim Cup is Rose Zhang's first experience of the event, and her debut has been remarkable. She and her partner Megan Khang started strong and were one up by the fourth hole.

They managed to keep the lead and even extended it to two up on the 10th hole. But Dryburgh and Sagstrom also had their moments and started a recovery that lasted until the 18th hole.

On the 11th, the Europeans managed to get back to the minimum difference, and on the 14th, they tied. From then on, the match remained even, but with enormous demonstrations of competitiveness on both sides.

On the 16th, Dryburgh holed his third chipping shot from the fairway, but Zhang responded with a putt to maintain the tie.

Something similar happened on the 18th. Dryburgh's drive touched down 10 feet from the hole, but bizarrely spun back and went into the rough. Sagstrom could not get the ball close enough, and the Europeans made par.

The Americans were not much more fortunate. Khang sent her drive into a grove of trees, but Zhang managed a high-class chip that left the ball on the edge of the green. They could not get the birdie that would have given them the victory, but they managed to tie in a match that, for sure, will be remembered.
