Rory McIlroy played a practice round at Oakmont Country Club ahead of the 2025 US Open. Fans reacted to his score, saying that his poor performance in the round indicates that he will likely miss the cut in the US Open.

After an 11-year major championship drought, McIlroy won the 2025 Masters Tournament and became a career Grand Slam winner. Two months after his victory at Augusta National, he competed in the RBC Canadian Open and had a disappointing run in the tournament, finishing with 9-over 149 and missing the cut.

During a press conference ahead of the US Open, the Northern Irish golfer revealed that he birdied his last two holes during his practice round, scoring 81. Fans who reacted to the news of his performance in the practice round have expressed that they are no longer confident in his ability to make the cut in the major tournament.

One fan commented:

“Incoming missed cut.”

Another fan pointed out that Dustin Johnson performed well in his practice round, so Rory McIlroy’s poor performance was unique only to him.

“DJ shot 5 under… sounds like a Rory [McIlroy] problem.”

Another fan compared McIlroy to the US Open defending champion Bryson DeChambeau, saying that the latter also performed better in his practice round.

The fan wrote:

“So Bryson beat him by 9 strokes in a practice round. Has Rory peaked?”

One user commented:

“TPC Toronto was just as challenging for him, says more about the state of his game than the golf course.”

Another user added:

“He also said he was finding it difficult to find motivation since Augusta, and then went on to miss the cut last week…”

Yet, another user chimed in:

“Sadly, Rory will miss the cut by many shots.”

The 2025 US Open will commence on Thursday, June 12. Rory McIlroy is scheduled to tee off for the tournament’s first round by 7:40 a.m. local time, grouped with Shane Lowry and Justin Rose.

During his first round at the RBC Canadian Open, Rory McIlroy birdied his first two holes and bogeyed his last two holes on the front nine. He shot two more bogeys and a birdie on the back nine, carding 71 at the end of the day.

On day two, the Hollywood-born golfer made par on his first four holes and then suffered a debilitating quadruple bogey on TPC Toronto’s par-4 fifth hole. He closed the front nine with a bogey on the eighth and opened the back nine with another bogey on the tenth.

Rory McIlroy’s performance continued to go downhill when he shot a double bogey on the par-3 11th hole. After two birdies and two more bogeys, he carded 78, bringing his total score across 36 holes to 9-over 149 and placing him in 149th position.
