The USGA has recently announced a new rule regarding scorecard sign-offs that will impact all pro tournaments moving forward. Moving forward, golfers will now have a 15-minute buffer period between finishing their rounds and signing their scorecards.

During these 15 minutes, golfers have the time to correct any errors on their scorecard, even if they have left the scoring area. Earlier, the USGA would disqualify any member who made an error on their scorecard. Now, with the chance of disqualification being slimmed down, golfers will have a chance to correct themselves in case of any errors.

The announcement of this rule has led to quite a discussion amongst fans on social media. One of the major points that was brought up during this discussion was Jordan Spieth's disqualification. In the now infamous incident, Spieth was disqualified from the 2024 Genesis Invitational after signing off on the wrong score.

His disqualification brought out a flaw in the sign-off system, which seems to have been corrected with the new rule. Fans are pleased with the 15-second buffer period and praised the USGA for making the change.

"I like it. I still think scoring responsibility should fall onto the players but this is a more reasonable allowance."

"Strong move on the part of @USGA and the @RandA. The “leaving the scoring area” strict cutoff was too punitive for scoring errors," one fan said.
"Smart change to the rules of golf," another fan commented.
"Finally something sensical in the game of golf," a fan replied.

The news comes as a welcome change for fans and players alike.

The story behind Jordan Spieth's disqualification from the 2024 Genesis Invitational due to the old USGA scorecard rule

Jordan Spieth was disqualified from the 2024 Genesis Invitational after the second round of the tournament. He was in contention to win but signed off on the wrong scorecard, and lost out on his chance to play despite making the cut into the weekend.

Speith shot a 2 over 73 on the second day of the Geneisis Invitational. However, he signed off his scorecard that had a 3 instead of a 4 on the par-3 fourth hole, of the second day. Spieth was disqualified from the event according to the old USGA rule.

He later took responsibility for the same, and posted on social media:

"Today, I signed for an incorrect scorecard and stepped out of the scoring area, after thinking I went through all procedures to make sure it was correct. Rules are rules, and I take full responsibility. I love this tournament and golf course as much as any on @PGATOUR so it hurts to not have a run at the weekend. Really appreciated the support in LA"

With the new change in rules, such disqualifications can be avoided in the future.
