About The Genesis Invitational 2024

The Genesis Invitational is a PGA Tour professional golf tournament in southern California that began as the Los Angeles Open 98 years ago, in 1926. Nissan Open, Northern Trust Open, and Genesis Open are some of the other names used. Annually held in February at Pacific Palisades' Riviera Country Club, it frequently marks the end of the tour's "West Coast Swing" early in the year before it heads east to Florida.

Since 1973, the tournament has been hosted at Riviera almost nonstop. After a 21-year sponsorship by Nissan Motors, the South Korea-based Hyundai Motor Group, through its Genesis Motors subsidiary, took over in 2017 after nine seasons from the Chicago-based Northern Trust Corporation.

The Genesis Invitational 2024 History

The Genesis Invitational lived a nomadic life in southern California before World War II, hopping from course to course. The first-ever event took place in Los Angeles Country Club in Los Angeles 98 years ago in 1926; for the only time, it moved to El Caballero Country Club in Tarzana in 1927. The tournament relocated to the Wilshire Country Club in the Hancock Park neighbourhood in 1928. It then made its maiden trip to the Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades in 1929 and 1930 before spending the following ten years in Los Angeles. The venue changed from Wilshire Country Club to Hillcrest Country Club in 1931–1933, then back to Los Angeles Country Club in 1934–1936. The event was held in Griffith Park (Wilson course) from 1937 to 1939.

Before World War II broke out, the event was held again at Hillcrest CC in 1942 after returning to Riviera CC in 1941.

Traditionally, the L.A. Open was held in early January to kick off the season; however, in 1967 and 1968, it was held in late January, and in 1974, it was shifted to the second part of February. It started its present partnership with Riviera CC the previous year. Since then, the tournament has only been held twice at other venues: in 1983 at Rancho Park Golf Course as Riviera got ready to host the PGA Championship, and in 1998 at Valencia Country Club as Riviera got prepared to host the U.S. Senior Open. 1995 the PGA Championship was held in Riviera, but the event was still held there.
