Sam Burns clinched the trophy in the 2023 WGC-Dell Match play. He defeated Cameron Young in the final to win by a score of 6&5.

The Match Play took place from March 22 to March 26 at the Austin Country Club with the world’s best 64 golfers competing to win $3.5 million from the purse of $20 million.

Top 5 highlights from the 2023 WGC-Dell Match Play Championship

1) Sam Burns Vs Cameron Young

One of the highlight moments from the Match Play was the final between Sam Burns and Cameron Young. Burns registered an easy win against Young with a score of 6&5.

Sam made eight birdies to clinch the trophy on Sunday, March 26 in the final of the tournament. He started with a bogey, but quickly took the lead after birdies on the 4th, 5th, and 6th holes.

Young beat Rory McIlroy in a sudden death hole in the semifinals but was defeated by Sam Burns in the final.


2) Scottie Scheffler vs. Rory McIlroy

Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler competed in the consolation final for third place at WGC-Dell. The World No.1 could not stand against the World No.3 and could only make five birdies in the final.

Scheffler started the round with a bogey but luckily made a birdie on the fourth hole. McIlroy, on the other hand, made three consecutive birdies on the 3rd, 4th, and 5th holes.

The Northern Irish golfer dominated the field throughout the round but Scheffler returned on the 12th hole with the hope of winning the third spot. However, McIlroy made an eagle and then two more birdies on the last holes and won the tournament by a score of 2&1.


3) Sam Burns Vs. Scottie Scheffler

The WGC-Dell semifinal match between Sam Burns and Scottie Scheffler was an interesting one.

Scottie and Burns competed in a neck-to-neck game and ended up in a tie. They both then played in a playoff, where Scheffler was defeated by Sam Burns by 1 up.

As the round started, Burns took the lead after making three birdies on the first three holes, but Scheffler was quick to turn the match in his favor. They both sank a birdie on the 16th hole before competing in the playoff.


4) Rory McIlroy Vs. Cameron Young

Rory McIlroy and Cameron Young played 19 holes in the semifinals, and the American golfer defeated the current World No. 3 by 1 up.

They started the game with a birdie on the first hole. McIlroy's level dropped as the game progressed, making a bogey on the third hole while Young birdied. McIlroy made five birdies and one bogey while Young gained the victory with his bogey-free seven birdies in the match.


5) Scottie Scheffler vs. Jason Day

Scottie Scheffler and Jason Day competed against each other in the quarterfinals of the WGC-Dell Match Play. The round started with Day making the first birdie of the day on the first hole. Scheffler tied up the score with a birdie on the third hole, with Day bogeying.

Day took the lead again after making two birdies and an eagle. He made six birdies and three bogeys. Scheffler, on the other hand, played a bogey-free round with eight birdies to secure his win.
