Rory McIlroy started the new year with a spectacular win at the 2023 Dubai Desert Classic. He won the tournament by one stroke over Patrick Reed. However, he has played in four PGA Tour events with the worst finish at the Players Championship.

McIlroy missed the cut in the tournament that wrapped up the finale on March 12. The Northern Irish golfer played one of the worst games of his career on the Florida field. He started the tournament with a double bogey and finished the inaugural round with four bogeys and two birdies.

Rory McIlroy ended the first day at 76 to finish at T118. His performance was subsequently depleted on Friday and he missed the cut of 2 overs.

On the second day, he made two bogeys, a double bogey, and three birdies to finish at 73, resulting in missing the cut.

Fatigue and his busy schedule are reportedly two major factors for his worst form. Speaking about the game, Rory McIlroy explained:

"Just very blah. I guess the course, you just have to be really on to play well here. If you're a little off, it definitely magnifies where you are off. It's a bit of an enigma. Some years I come here, it feels easier than others. It's just a tricky golf course, and you don't hit fairways, you've got your work cut out for you."

McIlroy also admitted that his time management is responsible for his poor performance. He went on to say:

"It's just the time management. The golf [at tournaments], that's fine, but it's just more the time at home to make sure you're getting prepared, to make sure that you're doing everything you can to be ready once you show up to these weeks. That's where I've maybe sacrificed a little bit of time with some of this other stuff."

"It's really just all about getting ready for August"- Rory Mcilroy preparing for the Masters

Rory McIlroy is now being focused on competing at the Masters, which will take place from April 6 to April 9. He wants to focus more on his game now and is practicing for the major tournament.

Speaking about the upcoming tournament, McIlroy confessed:

"Just making sure my game is in shape for Augusta. Making sure that I've got all the shots. Making sure that I familiarize myself with the golf course again and go up there for a couple of days. But, yeah, from now all the way until the start of April, it's really just all about getting ready for Augusta."

Rory McIlroy also changed his driver at the Genesis Invitational and played with the same at The Players Championship and that has also affected his gameplay.

The former world No.1 finished at T32 at the WM Phoenix Open and 29th position at the Genesis Invitational. Rory McIlroy finished in second position alongside Harris English at the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

It is important to note that Scottie Scheffler has won the Players Championship and took home $4.5 million in prize money.
