Sam Burns created history on Sunday by winning the 2023 WGC-Dell Technologies Matchplay in his very first appearance at the tournament. He beat Cameron Young 6-and-5 in the finals.

This was Burns' fifth win on the PGA Tour. Burns started playing college golf for Louisiana State University (LSU). He won four tournaments in 15 collegiate starts during his sophomore year. He was also included in the first-team All-American and was also awarded the NCAA Division I Jack Nicklaus National Player of the Year for the 2016–17 season.

Burns was part of the winning United States team during the 2017 Arnold Palmer Cup team. He made his PGA Tour debut at the Sanderson Farms Championship where he finished T43. That year, he qualified for the Barbasol Championship, a PGA Tour event where he finished T6.

After finishing at T10 in the Web.com Tour Qualifying Tournament, Burns ensured a place in the first 12 starts of the Web.com Tour event for the 2018 season. He had a joint runner-up finish at the Colombia Championship. Then he finished T7 at the Honda Classic, where Tiger Woods was his playing partner in the final round.

This performance earned Burns a place in the Valspar Championship, where he finished T12. His first win came at the 2018 Web.com Tour's Savannah Golf Championship, defeating Roberto Castro by a single stroke. By the end of the 2018 season, he had earned a PGA Tour card.

Since earning his PGA Tour card, Burns has won five PGA Tour events. Burns' first PGA Tour victory came in 2021's Valspar Championship for his first PGA Tour victory. Burns carded a 68 on the fourth day to beat Keegan Bradley by a three-stroke margin. His second victory in 2021 came at the Sanderson Farms Championship, beating Nick Watney and Cameron Young by one stroke.

The following year, Burns was able to successfully defend his Valspar Championship title, beating Davis Riley in a playoff. His second win of the season came in the Charles Schwab Challenge, beating World No.1 Scottie Scheffler in the playoffs.

The WGC-Dell Technologies Matchplay was his most recent win where he beat Scheffler in the semifinals followed by a victory over Cameron Young in the final.

Since earning a PGA Tour card in 2019, Burns has played 121 events and has made the cut in 81 of them. He has had 26 top-10 finishes, thrice as a runner-up and twice he has secured a third-place finish.

The 26-year-old has made career earnings of $19,905,285 on the PGA Tour so far in his quite young career.
