Neal Shipley received a stroke penalty in the third round of the 2024 US Open after he was adjudged for causing his ball to move after addressing it. The third Major of the year is being played at Pinehurst No.2 in Pinehurst, North Carolina. The incident with Neal Shipley happened on the par-4 13th. Shipley made a powerful drive from the far left tee box resulting in the ball landing on the left side of the fairway and to a position 54 yards away from the hole. On the second shot, Shipley made his wedge shot spin off the green, rolling back 30 yards to an upslope. Before the third shot, Shipley assessed his options, but the ball moved when he addressed it. He stepped back and called for a rules official. Rules official and his playing partner assessed the incident and Shipley was given a stroke penalty under rule 9.4. In a statement, USGA said (via Golf Digest):"In preparing to make the stroke, Neal set the club down behind the ball and then adjusted the club when the ball then moved. Because the ball had been at rest for some time and then moved immediately after he adjusted his club, it is virtually certain that he caused the ball to move."About the stroke penalty, Shipley said (via Golf Digest):"Making the assumption that my club was what caused it to move is a fair assesement. Honestly, I don't think I caused it to move, but it doesn't really matter what I think. It's a tough one to swallow, but that's golf. You have to move on."Neal Shipley's playing partner Aaron Rai later said he felt that Shipley didn't cause the ball to move and disagreed with the one-shot penalty, however, the USGA officials ruled otherwise. The amateur golfer ended up making a double bogey on the hole. Till the 12th hole, Shipley had made five birdies and two bogeys and was 3-under par. He was leading the race for low amateur honors at the Pinehurst. However, after the double bogey, he scored two more bogeys on the 15th and 16th holes to finish 1-over 71.Shipley is currently tied at T25 with 4-over 214. He is competing with Luke Clanton who is tied at T25 too for the low amateur honors. Another amateur to make the cut is Gunnar Broin 10 strokes behind Shipley and Clanton.Neal Shipley's performance at the 2024 MastersThe 22-year-old Neal Shipley earned his place at the US Open 2024 and 2024 Masters after being a runner-up at the 2023 US Amateur.
