"You don't really get that anywhere else in the world”: Cameron Smith on the ‘home of Golf’

Cameron Smith clinched the first major of his career in 2022 at the Open Championship. However, the Aussie golfer explained that the biggest celebration was for him when he registered a victory at the Australian PGA Championship in November.

The 29-year-old recently confessed in his interview with CNN that the victory in Australia left a good taste in his mouth towards the end of the year. He said:

"That left a really good taste in the mouth for the end of the year. There was a few more people there and I think it was kind of a celebration of the year as well.

"I think it was kind of always the plan to go out on that Sunday night and have a drink anyway. So for us to have the Kirkwood Cup there as well, something to drink out of, was awesome."

Cameron Smith marked the 10th victory of his career in Brisbane. He spoke about the city in his interview. He said:

"The town there is just so unique, everything's about golf. You don't really get that anywhere else in the world. It just such a cool place, and the course is so cool. Playing in those conditions, those windy, firm, fast conditions is something that I really enjoy ... I play my best golf when I have to be creative."

Smith went on to elaborate:

"It was very surreal. I think it's something that you dream of and probably you don't [even] get that far in your dreams. There were Aussies screaming out, 'Aussie, Aussie, Aussie!', all that stuff. It was just such an unreal moment."

Cameron Smith finishes fifth at the 2023 LIV Golf Mayakoba

Cameron Smith signed a contract with LIV Golf last year. The Australian golfer finished in fifth position in the first tournament of the 2023 LIV Golf. He started the tournament with a bogey on the third hole and then went on to make six bogeys in the opening round.

The second round also did not go in his favor and his ranks subsequently decreased. However, playing for the Ripper GC, Smith ended the final day with a score of under 6 to finish at T5.

Having turned professional in 2013, Smith played on the Asian Tour before earning the PGA Tour card.

He started his journey with the PGA Tour of Australasia and was tied for second position at the 2015 Coca-Cola Queensland PGA Championship.

Cameron Smith earned his PGA Tour card for the 2015-16 season after tying for 15th position at the RBC Heritage.

He finished in 157th position in the FedEx Cup points list and finished runner-up in the Nationwide Children's Hospital Championship.

The Aussie competed in all four major tournaments and won the 150th Open Championship in 2022. He finished second at the Masters in 2020 and fourth at the US Open in 2015.

However, he joined LIV Golf in 2022 and was thus barred from playing on the PGA Tour. Nonetheless, he is still competing on the PGA Tour of Australasia.
