When was the first US Open held? Exploring the Major Championship's history

The 2025 US Open to be held at the Oakmont Country Club is around the corner. The first US Open Championship was held on October 4, 1895, at Newport Golf Club in Newport, Rhode Island. This marked the beginning of one of the four Major championships in men's golf. The event was organized by the United States Golf Association (USGA), which had been established just a year earlier in 1894.

The first edition of this tournament featured only 11 competitors, including 10 professionals and one amateur. They played 36 holes in a single day over a 9-hole course, to complete four circuits of the layout. The field was initially built for British and Scottish professionals working at American clubs, as golf was not so popular in the United States at that time.

Horace Rawlins, a 21-year-old assistant professional from England, won the event with a total score of 173. It included 91in the morning round and 82 in the afternoon. He had been playing at Newport Golf Club for just a few months before the tournament. Rawlins received $150 in prize money along with a gold medal and the USGA's championship trophy.

The total prize purse for this tournament was $335, distributed among the top finishers. Willie Dunn, who had finished second, received $100. Amateur golfer, Arthur Lockwood, finished in last place.

Initially, the US Open was not as popular compared to the US Amateur Championship, which was considered more prestigious. However, a few years later, especially after American player Francis Ouimet's 1913 playoff in Brookline, the tournament gained widespread interest.
