The 17th version of the revised National Football league, currently known as I-League is set to kick-off tomorrow. The National League was introduced way back in 1996 when Indian football was struggling for its existence. The AIFF got motivated after watching the sizzling success of Japan’s J-League, and tried to introduce a similar kind of associated tournament in India for developing the football standard in the country.
The former National League was introduced in 1996, in which 10 teams took part in the very first year. JCT bagged the inaugural crown of the National League, while Air India also performed very well due to the showings of Jeevan Mores and Godfrey Pereira. Bhaichung Bhutia scored the most number of goals, while Godfrey Pereira was selected the man of the tournament in the inaugural edition.
The National League was converted to the I-League in 2007, with ONGC their first sponsor. There are currently 14 teams in the I-League, who during the course of a season (from October to May) play every other team twice, once at their home stadium and once at that of their opponents, for a total of 26 games. Teams receive three points for a win and one point for a draw. No points are awarded for a loss. Teams are ranked by total points. At the end of each season, the club with the most points is crowned champion.

The I-League champions gain a spot in the AFC Cup group stage rounds, while the Federation Cup winners also play in the AFC Cup group stage.
Dempo were the winners of the first revised I-League in 2007, and have also won a record five times (2004-05, 2006-07, 2007-08, 2009-10, 2011-12). Kolkata giants Mohun Bagan have won the crown thrice (1997-98, 1999-2000, 2001-02), while another Kolkata heavyweight East Bengal have also bagged the title thrice (2000-01, 2002-03, 2003-04). Salgaocar has won it twice (1998-99, 2010-11), JCT once (1996-97 the inaugural version), Mahindra United once (2005-06), and the Churchill Brothers once (2008-09).
Armando Colaco of Dempo is the most successful coach in this tournament, as his side has bagged the crown five times during his 12 year tenure with the club.
