Katsumi Yusa stars as Mohun Bagan beat BNR 3-0 to secure 3rd place

Katsumi Yusa scored a brace and assisted one goal helping Mohun Bagan win their first game in three matches

Mohun Bagan turned on the style in the second half to beat Bengal Napur Railway FC (BNR) in the Calcutta Football League 3-0 to go third. Katsumi Yusa scored a goal on either side of a Dudu Omagbemi goal, that he setup, to round off a comprehensive win for the I-League Champions.

From the early minutes of the game, BNR made their intentions clear as they sat back and defended deep against a very fluid Bagan attack. Bagan were unable to create any clear-cut chances in a game that was full of hard tackling.

Bagan came out for the second half with renewed vigor and as they needed a win after two successful draws in the league. When things did not change, Bagan manager Sanjoy Sen brought on Kean Lewis and Asif Kottayil to replace Ram Malik and Lalkamal Bhowmick respectively.

The substitution sparked Bagan into life and they in the 69th minute they broke through the resilient BNR defense. BNR failed to clear a Bagan corner with the ball going all the way through the six-yard-box and the clearance bounced off Yusa to hand Bagan the lead.

Yusa then turned creator when he came in through the left wing to cross the ball towards Dudu Omagbemi who headed the ball into an open net. By this time BNR looked dejected and Bagan looked hungry for more and they got more in the 87th minute.

Yusa scored a free kick to end the game in style

Mithun Naha conceded a foul just outside the box which Dudu and Yusa threatened to take. It was eventually Yusa who took the free-kick, which was deflected off the wall past the goalkeeper to earn Bagan their first victory in three matches.

Bagan play second place Army XI next on the 25th of August which could be a very important game for Bagan in the context of winning the CFL for the first time since 2009. Bagan goalkeeper Debjit Majumdar has already talked about the importance of winning the CFL stating, “Since Mohun Bagan has not won the Calcutta Football League for quite sometime now, our first target will be to win this tournament.”

The result leaves Bagan well placed in the league as leaders East Bengal face Mohammedan Sporting in their next game and a favorable result could see Bagan make their way to the top of the table.

The week is looking even better for the I-League Champions as they will celebrate their 125th founding anniversary.
