IndyCar's eighth round of the 2025 season will take place today (Sunday, June 15) at the World Wide Technology Raceway. The series' 27 drivers will vie for the top spot on the podium, which has been graced by only two drivers this season - reigning champion Alex Palou and Andretti Global's Kyle Kirkwood.
Palou has won five of seven races, including the 109th Indy 500, while Kirkwood, the master on street circuits, has won the Long Beach GP and the Detroit GP. The latter comes into the Bommarito Automotive Group 500 on the high of winning in Detroit two weeks ago.
However, the duo has stiff competition from the three Team Penske drivers. Will Power and Scott McLaughlin locked out the front row in qualifying, with Josef Newgarden slightly back in P5. Power secured a record-extending 71st pole position in IndyCar, giving Penske its 700th pole in the series on Saturday.
It came at the cost of his 2024-pole-sitting teammate McLaughlin missing out on a consecutive pole at WWTR. However, the bigger threat is Newgarden in P5, who has won four of the last five IndyCar races at the 1.25-mile oval and five overall.
Arrow McLaren's Pato O'Ward and AJ Foyt Racing's David Malukas split the three Penskes by securing P3 and P4 on the grid, respectively. Palou had a substandard qualifying session, earning a P9 spot. Kirkwood occupied the place behind him to round out the Top 10.
