That brings us to the end of a fascinating Test match and in the end, the 1-1 result is a fair indication of how things went in the series. Australia have certainly retained the Frank Worrell trophy, but West Indies have won something far more valuable than that. West Indies have a moment to savour and a memory that this young group will carry with them for a long long time. It was an absolute pleasure bringing you the live coverage from this encounter. a long long time. This Bala signing off with tears of joy, along with Arya Sekhar Chakraborty.
It was not long ago that West Indies had hit rock bottom. They had a disastrous T20 World Cup campaign. They failed to qualify for the 2023 ODI World Cup and the Champions Trophy. Many of you might remember the image of Alzarri Joseph sitting on his knees after the defeat against Zimbabwe that sealed that fate. The number of fans who once had parties in the stadiums were dwindling. There was nothing worse that could happen to the West Indies cricket. But this, this moment in the sunshine, this little moment of happiness, will bring smiles to the faces of a generation that has seen the glory days. This may be a small step, but this is a step in the right direction. It can only be upwards from here. World cricket needs West Indies, and West Indies needs cricket to bring in the real happiness.
A whole lot of the talks had moved on to the big three in Test match cricket. This must be a reminder that the other teams have plenty more to offer. As skipper Brathwaite said, the more the better.
Defeating Australia in Australia is a feat in itself. The way West Indies have struggled in this format away from home, this is a remarkable achievement. This will certainly be at par with the twin T20 World Cup victories.
West Indies last won a game at Gabba in 1988. Gordon Greenidge, Desmond Haynes and Richie Richardson were their top three in the game. Malcolm Marshall, Curtly Ambrose and Courtney Walsh formed their fast bowling unit. Compare that with this young side. Nobody came them a chance coming into the series. When they were 5 down for 64 in the first innings, everyone thought its going the same way as the first Test, but what a lion-hearted performance it has been.
Pat Cummins (Australia captain): Obviously disappointed. Fantastic Test and fantastic series. Shamar bowled superbly. We were not good enough in the end. We were confident coming here today. Yesterday, we thought that 200 was achievable. But the bridge was a it too far. We have seen it for 15 years from Smith. Took us here almost single-handedly. It's been brilliant, the same group for the home summer. Big effort from, 37 degrees, 80-90 percent humidity, and they still gave it all. We can hold our head high. This game humbles you. West Indies were fantastic. Always great fun to watch. Always exciting batters, awesome celebrations, couple of good fast bowlers. 1-1 is a fair result I guess.
Kraigg Brathwaite (West Indies captain): I love it. We won a Test match in Australia and that's a huge moment. My message to the group is it's just the beginning and it has to continue. I am extremely proud as a captain. Rodney Hogg said we are pathetic and hopeless and I would like to ask him are these muscles big enough for him? (showing his biceps) Probably an hour before play I knew that Shamar could bowl. The doctor gave him an injection. He is a superstar. The belief is exceptional. This is just the beginning and continue playing with heart. Very proud of the guys. They showed a lot of heart, especially after the first Test. It was good to see Hodge and Josh put up a great show with the bat. Yeah of course, the more Test cricket the batter. I would love more Test cricket for sure.
Shamar Joseph is the Player of the Match and the Player of the Series. He receives the Riche Benaud medal as well! Here's what the toast of the world has to say: Actually amazing for me. Need to give a shoutout to my teammates and the staff and giving me a good toe to bowl with. I wanted to do it for my team and my country and everyone in the Caribbean. To the supporters here I must shout out a thanks to you guys for believing in us. The doc called me this morning after 11. He asked me how I was feeling, I said not too well. He said come to the ground, I have a reason. I must give a shoutout to him for believing in my ability. It's all about getting close. Having Alzarri backing me, a senior player in Kemar Roach...everybody was emotional. Tears of joy, I had the belief I could bring the West Indies home. It's all about believing. It's taken a lot of sacrifices to get here. It's just to stick to the basics, continue learning and learn from the senior ones.
How about Kevin Sinclair. He did not have enough food on his in his younger days. Cricket was something that he took up to get out of poverty. His half-century in the first innings and the partnership with Joshua Da Silva helped West Indies recover from 64 for 5 and put a decent score on the board.
Joshua Da Silva: Phenomenal. Words can't describe the feeling. For him (Shamar) to come out there after yesterday and have that determination. Everybody including the coaches had that optimism. It was a great Test match - the wicket was great, the fans were great.
Kemar Roach: Amazing. We knew it was going to take something special to beat the number 1 team in the world. The guys were always confident, we kept calm and were relaxed. (On Shamar Joseph) Unbelievable - I think that's the most brilliant spell I've seen from a West Indian bowler. This is something extremely special for the people back in the Caribbean. Stay calm - the team that stays the calmest will win the Test match. That's what we did. We knew that something special was on and that was Shamar Joseph. As a young group I'm very proud of the guys. The heart they've showed and the fight, we stayed in the contest.
Remember Kemar Roach, the man who has led the fast bowling attack for a long time. He first came here in 2009 and made a mark breaking Ricky Ponting's hand with a bumper. This could be the last time we would be seeing him play in Australia, and he is going out on a high.

The day began with Australia still 156 runs away from the victory target with 8 wickets in hand. Steve Smith and Cameron Green came out to resume proceedings and they defied the Windies bowlers for the first half an hour and also scored some important runs. They looked a bit tentative but managed to wear out the Windies bowlers. A toe crusher from Mitchell Starc didn't allow Shamar Joseph to bowl on the third day. However he broke the pain barrier and delivered a sensational spell which will be remembered for ages. He got rid of Cameron Green with an absolute beauty before removing Travis Head for a golden duck. Head who had come into the match on the back of a splendid century, secured a king pair after going for a first ball duck in the first innings as well.
All of a sudden, the floodgates were opened and Australia was under pressure. Mitchell Marsh flayed his bat around for a couple of boundaries before nicking one to the slip cordon. Shamar Joseph continued his dream spell, castling Alex Carey with a beauty of an inswinger. It was full and came in late to rattle the stumps. Mitchell Starc came in at the fall of his wicket and started throwing his bat at everything. He smashed four boundaries in his breezy knock of 21 which came in just 14 deliveries. He went after another short of a length delivery from Shamar and ended up getting a top edge which was safely pouched by the cover fielder.
From one Joseph to another, it was the turn of Alzarri to make an impact in the game. He nicked off Pat Cummins with a delivery that shaped away after hitting the deck. With 28 runs more needed to win, Nathan Lyon and Smith came out to resume the innings after lunch. Lyon struck an important boundary to reduce the victory target before under-edging one straight to Joshua Da Silva. Steve Smith batted brilliantly but West Indies had the final laugh as Shamad Joseph castled Josh Hazlewood with a beauty as West Indies eventually went onto win by 8 runs.
It was the West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite who won the toss and opted to bat. West Indies were in early trouble on Day 1 after being reduced to 64/5. They desperately needed a partnership and it was the duo of Kavem Hodge and Joshua Da Silva who turned the complexion of the game with a solid partnership. The 149 run partnership gave West Indies some sort of momentum. Both were dismissed in the 70s before Kevin Sinclair showed his class on debut, taking West Indies to a more than competitive score of 311. The West Indies fast bowlers breathed fire with the new pink ball and reduced Australia to 24/4.
It was exceptional bowling from Alzarri Joseph and Kemar Roach. Mitchell Marsh departed soon after as Australia lost half their side for just 56. They needed someone to step up and it was Alex Carey who gave Australia the momentum with a breezy knock of 65 which came in just 49 deliveries. Usman Khawaja played a brilliant hand for the hosts as Australia got close to the West Indies first score. However Pat Cummins decided to have a shot at West Indies under lights and declared despite being 22 runs behind. It did work for them as Tagenarine Chanderpaul nicked the final delivery on Day 2. Every middle order batters got a start but couldn't quite convert it into a significant score. Alick Athanaze and Kirk McKenzie looked solid out in the middle before throwing their wickets away cheaply.
Australia was back on top as they kept chipping away with the wickets and managed to skittle out West Indies for just 193 with Josh Hazlewood and Nathan Lyon bagging 3 wickets each. Australia started off in an aggressive manner in the second innings before Usman Khawaja got a feather down the leg side of the bowling of Alzarri Joseph. Marnus Labuschagne also went early to reduce Australia to 42/2. Smith and Cameron Green faced some heat from the Windies bowlers but managed to take them to stumps without losing any further wickets.
Shamar Joseph was in tears yesterday after getting hit on the toes and having to retire hurt. He bowled 10 overs on the trot picking up 6 wickets, while hobbling around in the outfield. Came back after the break and knocked out the final one. How much praise is enough for this man!
Think about Michael Holding, Viv Richards, Andy Roberts, Curtly Ambrose, Courtney Walsh, Ian Bishop, Brian Lara. The humiliation they would have felt all these years seeing the fall of West Indian Test team. This is a moment of redemption for them. This young and resilient team has given them a moment to be proud of.
The Fire in Babylon has been rekindled today. Do not doubt it. The streets of Kingston, Port of Spain, St. Lucia, Basseterre and of course, Georgetown and Berbice will celebrate today. Plenty of punch rum is going to flow.
Take a bow Shamar Joseph! Remember, coming from a remote village at Baracara deep inside a village in Berbice, Guyana, he left his job as a night security guard and started playing cricket 18 months ago! Now he has picked a 7-wicket haul to win West Indies a Test in Australia after 26 years!
