Commentary

Whew! A fitting end to a tournament that has served us nothing but entertainment and action! It will be the Mumbai Indians who will be etched into our minds as the inaugural champions of the Womens Premier League. They have played like true champions throughout the season and richly deserve the silverware! As women's cricket ushers into a new era, it will be the WPL which will surely play a huge part in unearthing and shaping some of the best talents of the future! Well then, it has been an absolute pleasure bringing to you all the live action from what have been nothing short of a riveting past few weeks. We hope you enjoyed our coverage. Until we meet again then, this is the trio of Shashwat Kumar, Soorya Sesha and myself (Maanas Upadhyay) signing off on behalf of Team Sportskeeda!

Harmanpreet Kaur walks up to the dais with BCCI President Roger Binny and the Secretary Jay Shah waiting with the glittering trophy, which they now hand over to her. Fireworks and confetti in the background as the entire team comes onto the dais. And they hold the trophy aloft and celebrate at the Brabourne Stadium. Mumbai Indians - the very first champions of the Women's Premier League! A moment to savor as they write themselves into eternal folklore. They will party long and hard into the night as they should!

Harmanpreet Kaur (MI skipper): I think it was a great experience for all of us. We were waiting for this moment for so many years. It feels like a dream, not only for me but for everyone here. So many people were asking us when the WPL was coming and the day is here. I think when you have such a long batting line-up, you need to go there and express. I am happy that everyone did what they had to and took responsibilty. Staying positive was the biggest key for us. We have been a little lucky today, lots of full tosses. But you need a little luck. It is a special moment for all of us and I have been waiting for this for a long time. I can finally feel how you feel after winning. I would like to thank the support staff. We just talked about how positive we were in the dressing room and how we have to go about. We executed our plans really well and that is the reason we are standing here today.

And now, MI skipper Harmanpreet Kaur collects the winner's cheque on behalf of her team. What a tournament they've had - five wins on the trot to start with and despite a blip, they were hands down the best team of the tournament. They turned up and won the big moments and dominated a good part of the final to ensure that despite a few hurdles along the way, they will end up lifting the trophy. Oh it must feel so so sweet for their skipper!

Let's hear from Delhi Capitals skipper Meg Lanning: There's no doubt we'd have loved to win tonight but full credit to Mumbai, they've been outstanding throughout the tournament. They thoroughly deserve it. I can't fault our girls much. We probably didn't have things going our way tonight, we didn't play our best game. We hadn't really set a target as such. We'd have liked to put a few more on the board. We didn't bat at our best. We just wanted to keep fighting and take it down to the end there. Just couldn't quite get over the line tonight. A bit frustrating but that's the way it goes. We felt like if we could take a few early wickets we could put them under pressure. We had a good powerplay but Nat Sciver-Brunt and Harmanpreet batted well to take it deep. We probably had to bowl them out to win the game. It's been an amazing experience. I've loved every moment of it. Delhi as a franchise is amazing. The team, the management and a support staff have been amazing. I hope this (WPL) keeps growing with each year.

The match officials now receive their mementos. And this is followed by DC skipper Meg Lanning receiving the runners-up cheque and shield! So close, yet so far for her. She's not used to losing finals as captain, but she can be very proud of how her team fought back from a hopeless situation today to make a match of it. This team has some special elements to work upon in the years to come and make no mistake, they've had a fabulous tournament in their own right.

Hayley Matthews is the Player of the Tournament! Here's what she had to say: I'm pretty happy to be contributing to the team's success. It feels fantastic to contribute. Continuously trying to improve in both aspects of the game. The conditions in India helped me with my off-spin as well. (On being asked whether she would like to be addressed as a batter or a bowler) Whichever one is going better on the day.

The Orange Cap is awarded to Meg Lanning!

The Purple Cap is awarded to Hayley Matthews. She spun a web against the opponents and picked up 16 wickets in the tournament at an economy of 5.94.

The one-handed catch taken by Harmanpreet Kaur at slip to dismiss Devika Vaidya has been voted the Catch of the Season. That was quite a take, wasn't it?

The FairPlay Award is shared between the Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals. Harmanpreet Kaur and Meg Lanning collect the trophy together.

Yastika Bhatia is the Emerging Player of the Season! She has had quite a season at MI - been terrific behind the stumps and has put in some handy knocks as well.

Sophie Devine is awarded the Power Striker of the Tournament! Some fantastic maximums along with the largest six of the tournament!

Natalie Sciver-Brunt wins the Player of the Match award for her dogged unbeaten 60. Here's what she has to say: It was very special. I'm glad I was able to stick it out when the pressure was on. To be there at the end was special. I was finding it quite tough and Harman was easing her way towards the total. She took the pressure off me, as did Amelia Kerr. The last 3-4 overs, we gave away too many more boundaries than we'd have liked. It made the game interesting. It means everything (to win the trophy). At the start of the tournament this is what we wanted. We have a very special group of girls at the Mumbai Indians.

Time for the tournament presentation!

Nat Sciver-Brunt: It feels amazing. At the start, we did not know what to expect but very glad to stand here as a winner. It's incredible. When you get together as a team, you have to build a bond and we did that very well. We've been having a great time and it showed in our cricket. I'm really proud of myself. The innings today was very contrasting to the one I played in the Eliminator. Previously, I was not there till the end to finish it off. Me and Harman have quite a lot of experience together. She played the conditions well and I took a little longer to get going. That partnership was really crucial.

Oh it sure has redefined women's sport alright. And as one of the hashtags reads, #YehTohBasShuruatHai - this is just the beginning!

Nita Ambani (Mumbai Indians co-owner): I think this is really overwhelming. To win this trophy in the first edition of the women's tournament is something fantastic. I think I'm very happy that we've now added one more trophy to the Mumbai Indians so way to go girls. I also hope that this inspires a lot of young athletes, especially my girls to take up sports and do well. As I always tell them, play from your heart, enjoy every moment of this game and the results will follow. And I need to thank all the fans, the MI Paltan - look at this amazing support that we had today. Just fabulous. All the boys of MI are also here. I hope we have a great celebration to celebrate how well the girls have done. I must also compliment the Delhi Capitals, they've played terrific throughout the tournament.

Pooja Vastrakar: Our start was so good, our end was bound to be good. I am super proud of the team for the way we have played. I want to keep doing well for the team and keep winning more trophies.

Humaira Kazi: Really proud of the way the team has been through throughout the tournament. I have enjoyed being part of the team. The main thing I have learned is to keep calm in pressure situations like how Nat did today.
