Scorecard
That's it from this edition of the tournament, we hope you enjoyed it as much as we did bringing you all the action. On behalf of my colleague, Abhinav Singh, and everyone in my team, this is Ankit Sharma signing off!!!
Credits to the Sri Lankan cricket board and their government to have hosted the first ever Lanka Premier League T20. Hopefully this is a start of what matures to be a prime tournament for everyone to look forward to. It has been a sensational first edition, and we cannot wait for the second season, which aims to take place in July-August 2021. Meanwhile for now, JAFFNA STALLIONS ARE THE INAUGRAL CHAMPIONS OF THE LANKA PREMIER LEAGUE T20.
The Stallions on the other hand, were on top of the game since the toss. Everything they did was right, and the experienced Shoaib Malik showing why he still plays the game, showing how good he is even at this age. An overall performance from the Jaffna team, ticking all boxes and very happy with their performance this season. A well deserved victory to them.
What a cracker of a final we've witnessed. Yes, the score seems to tell you another story, but boy did Galle fight back, with their courageous captain leading from the front. Scoring at over a strike rate of 200, with an injury, giving it everything, sending a message that his team will not go down without a fight. Although, the total was always too much and seemed out of reach especially with Galle's top three getting out within a blink of an eye. Rajapaksa and Azam gave it their all, but could not cause much damage. But Galle have made it till the finals, have shown their calibre, their intent and will be happy with the tournament they've had. As their captain said, they will be looking forward to the next season to bounce back.
Thisara Perrera, Jaffna Stallions captain: Really really happy, boys did well so very happy. If we put up a good score we can maintain pressure, hence chose to bat first. Secret is we are gelling as a family so that’s good. Never doubted the teams ability, we experimented in the last few matches but we knew our full strength and executed that in the semi finals and finals. Thank you the minister and board for hosting this event, even the doctors and organizers. Thanks for the opportunity and it’s a great tournament and we can improve next year as well.
Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Galle Gladiators captain: Got to thank god, tough to lose here but everyone showed character and has been a collective effort, it’s sad but a close loss at the end. We can’t blame anything, just had a bad day. Stallions played better today. Can’t blame the bowlers, as we probably have given away 25 extra runs in the field. Big task to chase close to 190, but we fought good after losing early wickets. But there’s another year and hopefully we can bounce back. Great young player, Lakshan, we’ve had a young side very fortunate to play among them. In the tournament, we came without a marquee player so we’re proud of having come so deep in the tournament. Thank you to the ministry for holding this tournament and I wish to play many more tournaments in Lanka in the future.
Player of the Series:

Wanidu Hasaranga:
Really happy to play and thankful to Lanka cricket board to organize this tournament and to be able to play in the inaugural edition is an honour, to win the tournament it’s an even greater honour. Learnt quite a lot playing with senior players, made sure we did the right thing and that’s how I played the tournament. Having likes of coaches, Thisara Perrera, Shoaib Malik and Johnson Charles was an honour and they were right with their experience which helped me a lot in playing and winning the tournament.
Emerging player of the tournament: Dhananjaya Lakshan
Man of the Match:

Shoaib Malik:
Really enjoyed the tournament, wanted to do well before as well but sometimes it doesn’t go too well. Will like to congratulate the organizers as well. The trophy is the biggest thing to take, it gives the satisfaction at the end of the day. MOM is the icing on the cake so pretty happy. Would like to congratulate the opposition as well, they've played a great tournament as well reaching the finals. Congratulations to Jaffna as well, we started well but lost the way in the middle but glad we made it through.
Hemang Badani (Assistant coach of Jaffna Stallions): To be honest, it has been a wonderful experience out here, the way the owners, the franchises have taken this tournament forward, a commendable job done by everyone. With the pandemic it was challenging and difficult to practice. They are great cricketers and young lads, there's talent for sure. In the future, few of them might represent their national side as well. I have learned how the game is played in this part of the world, how to fight back, bounce back. If the franchise wants me to come back then i surely will be here.
Tom Moores: It feels amazing, to have won. A bunch of great guys in the team, it's like one big family. Learnt a lot about the culture, unbelievable experience. We were always backed up by our coaching staff, even when we lost a few games, so that gave us a lot of confidence. It would be really great to come back next season, so let's hope I do.
Dhananjaya de Silva: We were very happy with a big score of 180+ on the board. Malik is an experienced player and he went about his game the way he knows best, he helped me out there, telling me how to go about things. I did not get a chance in the last few games to come up the order and play, so it was my best chance to perform out in the middle. We were always happy with the team and had backing from our coaches so very happy with the win.
Johnson Charles: Always feels great to win a championship. Just glad we made it all the way and a very good feeling. Definitely keeping wickets helped me as it made me looks at the bowlers and help them out. Definitely confident with the score out there and we backed our bowlers to see it through for us. Lovely atmosphere of the LPL good guys around, good food and lots of fond memories to take back home.
Jaffna Stallions won by 53 runs.
Shoaib Malik sees off the last over, as no runs are scored, Sandakan decides to stay not out rather than going after the senior spinner. So that's it, Jaffna Stallions win the match, and the tournament, as their captain uproots the stumps and fist bumps the officials. The rest of the team join them in the middle as there are hugs all around. Many Congratulations to the Champions of the first ever Lanka Premier League T20. Stay tuned for the post match presentation.
Over: 20 | Summary: 0 0 0 0 0 1 Bowler: Shoaib Malik Score: 135/9
19.6 Shoaib Malik to Lakshan Sandakan, JAFFANA STALLIONS HAVE WON THE INAUGURAL EDITION OF LPL! flighted delivery bowled on the legstump. Sandakan looking to go unbeaten at stumps, clips the ball off his pads to deep backward square leg for a single! Kudos to Jaffna Stallions for outplaying Galle Gladiators but what a tame ending to the competition as Lakshan Sandakan nearly plays two straight maiden overs!
19.5 Shoaib Malik to Lakshan Sandakan, loopy, tossed up delivery on the offstump, hit confidently back to the bowler. Sandakan looking to come and open the batting in tomorrow's morning session!
19.4 Shoaib Malik to Lakshan Sandakan, length ball on the offstump, punched off the backfoot to short catching extra cover. Instead of piling the dots, Sandakan can at least try and go for the big hits!
19.3 Shoaib Malik to Lakshan Sandakan, another tossed up ball on the offstump. Sandakan with both his feet deep in the crease defends the ball with a straight bat back to the bowler
