Day 4 - Gujarat beat Karnataka by six runs!
You are not reading it wrong. It is true - Gujarat have pulled an incredible come-from-behind victory out of the fire while defending a mere 109 runs. Resuming their second innings on 171/7, they added 48 more runs with Umang Kumar scoring 57. With the ball keeping low and turning square, spin was the way to go although a 50-run opening stand between Mayank Agarwal and Devdutt Padikkal put the visitors in cruise control.
What followed thereafter though was a collapse of epic proportions with Karnataka's shot selection leaving plenty to be desired. Just like that, they sank to 77/7 before Shubhang Hegde ate away at the deficit. Once he was dismissed though, it spelled doom again for Karnataka and an injured Prasidh Krishna was forced to bat at number 11. He got off the mark with a six down the ground but in a bid to attempt another one three overs later, he was castled. Left-arm spinner Siddharth Desai was the hero for Gujarat with returns of 7/42 while Rinkesh Vaghela bagged the remaining three wickets including the last one of Prasidh.
Gujarat now move to the top of their group with 12 points while Karnataka will be hurting and left ruing over what could have been, considering that they were primed to top the table themselves!
Stumps on Day 3 - Gujarat 171/7, lead Karnataka by 61 runs in the 2nd innings.
Gujarat have entered the lead but with just three wickets in hand, it is a slender one at this point. Manan Hingrajia top-scored with 56 while Kshitij Patel failed to convert his start of 26 into a big one. Umang Kumar is batting on 29 with skipper Chintan Gaja on 8, even as V Koushik continues to remain as miserly as ever. Three quick wickets is what Karnataka's bowling attack will be after to ensure they have a shot at securing the win with a bonus point, for which they must not lose a wicket in their chase.
Tea on Day 3 - Gujarat 99/4, trail Karnataka by 11 runs in the 2nd innings.
A stronger display by Gujarat in the second session as they are just 11 runs shy of rubbing off the deficit. Manan Hingrajia (33*) and Kshitij Patel (20*) are in the middle of a 47-run partnership even as V Koushik picked up a second wicket. Mayank Agarwal was forced to roll his arm over with Prasidh Krishna not available and it remains to be seen as to how much the seamer's absence will hamper Karnataka's charge for an outright win.
Lunch on Day 3 - Gujarat 17/2, trail Karnataka by 93 runs in the 2nd innings.
Gujarat did well to clean up the Karnataka tail after Manish Pandey (88) and Sujay Sateri (31) were dismissed on the third morning. Karnataka pocketed a solid lead of 110 though before V Koushik and Vijaykumar Vyshak struck to leave the hosts reeling on 17/2. With the injured Prasidh Krishna unlikely to bowl, Karnataka will seek to make further inroads and wipe out the rest of the Gujarat batting lineup as soon as they can.
Stumps on Day 2 - Karnataka 328/5, lead Gujarat by 64 runs in the 1st innings.
Another dominant day's play sees Karnataka occupy pole position in the contest. Manish Pandey remains unbeaten on 56 while debutant wicket-keeper Sujay Sateri has played his role to stay unbeaten on 24. With the first innings lead under their belt, Karnataka will now look to push for an outright result on Days 3 and 4 to make it two wins out of two to begin their Ranji Trophy campaign.
Tea on Day 2 - Karnataka 238/4, trail Gujarat by 26 runs in the 1st innings.
The opening stand between Mayank Agarwal and Ravikumar Samarth was brought to a halt on 172 by Siddharth Desai. While Agarwal scored 109, marking his first ton of the season, Samarth made a compact 60 with Devdutt Padikkal also chipping in with a breezy 42. Vice-captain Nikin Jose was run out at the stroke of Tea and the onus now rests on veteran batter Manish Pandey to power Karnataka into a sizeable lead.
Lunch on Day 2 - Karnataka 147/0, trail Gujarat by 117 runs in the 1st innings.
It's been a morning of sheer dominance by Karnataka having bowled Gujarat out on the first day. Skipper Mayank Agarwal has shown the way and is currently batting on 94 off just 101 deliveries having taken the attack to the bowlers. Ravikumar Samarth is giving him good company on 50 and with first innings parity just 117 runs away, the visitors are in with a shot of bossing this game for good. Can Gujarat roar back post Lunch though?

The fifth-wicket resistance between Kshitij Patel (95) and Umang Kumar (72) was broken not long after Tea by Vijaykumar Vyshak, post which Karnataka called the shots to bowl Gujarat out for 264. V Koushik finished with returns of 4/49 and cleaned up the tail to finish what he started earlier this morning. There was an injury scare for Karnataka though with Prasidh Krishna limping off the field, making it further imperative for the visitors to cash in and bag a massive first innings lead.

After the morning session belonged to Karnataka's seamers, it was Gujarat's turn to mount a fightback in the post-Lunch session. Kshitij Patel built on his start and is currently batting on 93 with Umang Kumar complementing him and batting on 60 as we speak. With the fifth-wicket partnership making merry, Karnataka need to strike right after Tea to storm back into the game.

Karnataka were on a roll in the opening session of their second round clash against Gujarat. V Koushik, fresh of a seven-fer against Punjab, continued his red-hot form as the pick of the bowlers with returns of 2/22 as he got the ball to move around while remaining accurate as ever. With Kshitij Patel batting on 32, Gujarat's hopes of posting a solid total hinge on his shoulders. Karnataka haven't felt the absence of Vidwath Kaverappa, who is on India A duty, with Test player Prasidh Krishna duly taking his place in the XI.
