Commentary

That's it for this game, folks! Harshal Patel has a debut to remember as India seals a stunning win over the Kiwis, against whom they now boast of a winning record in T20I cricket. They will look to widen the gap in the third and final T20I, set to take place on Sunday in Kolkata! Can India complete a white-wash over the Kiwis or will Southee and co bounce back from these losses? This is a conversation for a later date. Harshal Patel: It has been a great game and couldn't have asked for a better debut. I feel progress is gradual, especially for someone like me, who isn't exceptionally talented. I have had to work hard and build my game. It has been a great journey so far. Today, I couldn't bowl my yorkers and loopy slower balls as I wasn't confident given the conditions but I back myself to execute the yorker more often than not. I have seen myself fallen into shiny things before but cricket is a way of expressing myself and hope to continue doing so in the future as well

Harshal Patel is the man of the match for his figures of 2/25 on debut!

Rohit Sharma (India captain): It was a great performance, especially from the bowlers. It was hard for them in the powerplay overs with the kind of batting that was on show. I kept telling them that it was a matter of one or two wickets and full credit to them. It is a young team and it is important for the players who are named in the side to get exposure and match time. I haven't really thought about changes to be honest for the last T20I. Harshal Patel is an experienced bowler who knows how and when to use his variations and is good to have him in the side going forward.

Tim Southee (NZ captain): Credit to India, who played the better cricket today. They came back well after the first six overs. There was some dew right through the game but full credit to India. We knew that there was going to be dew as soon as we stepped onto the field for the warm-ups but the Indian bowlers were spot-on. We will look back at this game and plan accordingly for the next T20I in Kolkata.

KL Rahul: We did really well by pulling the game back after the first six overs. The NZ batters hit us hard in the first couple of overs and got off to a really good start. The bowlers felt that change of pace would be good and that we had to be brave with the ball. It was not easy to bowl as well with the wet ball. The bowlers were brave and made the batters' job way easier. We (Rohit and I) always give ourselves a couple of overs to see what the pitch was doing. It's easier said than done when you are watching while you are fielding but we wanted to see how it played. We spoke about picking our bowlers to target and went ahead with it. Both of us had to take down whoever was bowling and that's what Rohit did. We try and see what works best for us as a batting unit. We want to take more chances in the middle if we have wickets in hand. We want to trust our middle order - there's a lot of power there with Surya playing really well, Shreyas back in the side and Venkatesh playing his first series. If we bat first we try to accelerate and set as many as we can for the opposition to come in. I've always been a big admirer of Rohit's batting - he's a class batter and he's shown the world that over the years. We take the pressure off each other - if there's a bowler I can't take down, he takes over without even saying it. Hopefully we can keep doing well and put on solid partnerships to give India good starts.

India beats New Zealand by seven wickets with 16 balls to spare!

Rahul Dravid and Rohit Sharma begin their reigns as coach and captain respectively with a series win and what a performance to get them the series win today! Although their bowlers set the tone with the ball, especially after a disappointing powerplay phase, the Indian batters needed to chase down a tricky target of 154 against the likes of Trent Boult and Tim Southee.

However, all of the doubts went down the drain as the Indian openers KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma aced the chase in a dominant manner. Although they were a touch tentative in the powerplay phase, Rahul and Rohit stepped on the gas in the middle-overs, taking Santner and Milne to the cleaners.

Each of them brought up their fifties and also the 100-run partnership before succumbing to Southee, who was the pick of the bowlers by a long way! Southee used his variations to good effect, picking a few wickets in the backend of the innings although it was a touch too late for them.

Venky Iyer was promoted up the order but it didn't go according to plan for the southpaw, who is still finding his feet at this level. However, India had Pant walk in amongst all the ruckus, who ensured that there was no last-over drama this time around as he whacked Jimmy Neesham around for two match-clinching or should we say series-clinching sixes down the ground.

All in all, India outplayed New Zealand, who just couldn't pick wickets in clusters or stitch valuable partnerships with the ball. However, it is not the end of the world for the Kiwis as they will ideally look to add some respectability to the scoreline with a win in the next fixture in Kolkata. But given how India have done in this series, it is going to be another thrilling encounter.

17.2 James Neesham to Rishabh Pant, SIX! ONE-HANDED! PANT SEALS IT IN HIS OWN STYLE! Slower delivery at the stumps and he shimmies down the track for a one-handed lift over the bowler's head. He's done this quite often alright and once again, a single hand is enough to send it towering over the fence as he wraps up the game and the series for his side. India beat New Zealand by 7 wickets and take the series 2-0 with a game to spare!

17.1 James Neesham to Rishabh Pant, SIX! JUST OVER! Welcome to the crease Jimmy Neesham - right in the slot from around the wicket as it angles into the stumps, Pant sits on one knee and slogs it a mile into the sky but the ball just carries over the mid-wicket fence with the boundary rider reduced to a spectator.

A lucky boundary to end the over but that has been the story of the day for New Zealand, who have also been outplayed by India. Only a matter of time before Iyer and Pant finish things off, given Boult and Southee are done for the day!

16.6 Trent Boult to Venkatesh Iyer, FOUR! SQUARED UP! Dug into a hard length outside off, Iyer fends at it with soft hands and stiff feet as the ball hits the shoulder of his blade and flies over the vacant slip cordon to the ropes.

16.5 Trent Boult to Rishabh Pant, length delivery angled into the pads, Pant flicks it around the corner off his pads for a leg bye through fine leg.

16.4 Trent Boult to Rishabh Pant, another short of a length delivery slanted into middle and leg, Pant has another fend at it looking to keep it into the leg-side but is beaten around it to be struck on his upper body before the ball lobs into the leg-side.

16.2 Trent Boult to Rishabh Pant, AHH! Short of a length delivery just around off, Pant looks to heave it flat with a gay abandon but ends up cut in half. Just a half-question from the keeper and guess what? New Zealand refer it! Could well be a chance review with nothing to lose really. Fair delivery.

The ball brushes the thigh pad with no bat involved and the LBW protocol shows the impact outside the line of off. The ball would have gone way over the stumps too.
