Thank you for staying with us throughout the afternoon. Fingers crossed we get a full game in on Saturday. Until then, it’s goodbye from myself, Pradeep, and my dear friend and co-commentator Arya. Stay safe, take care, and we’ll catch you next time with plenty more cricketing action!
Match abandoned without a ball bowled!
Just the kind of news we didn’t want to hear to kick off the series. What began with a wet outfield was only made worse by persistent drizzle over the past hour, leaving no window for play in the opening T20I.
All eyes now turn to the skies, hoping for clearer conditions tomorrow so that the second T20I can proceed without interruptions. West Indies, in particular, were eager to get some valuable game time under their belt, build rhythm, and bounce back to winning ways — but for now, their wait extends a little longer.
4:00 PM local (8:30 PM IST): We have some bad news coming in. The game has been abandoned due to rain! The rain played spoilsport and that means we have to wait for the action on Saturday for the second game of the series.
3:30 PM local (8 PM IST): There's nothing new to report. There are a few umbrellas out in the middle as the groundstaffs taking a look at the situation. It continues to drizzle though and the waiting game continues.
2:45 PM local (7:15 PM IST): It has rained a lot earlier. Will take about 90 mins to get the ground ready. Right now, it is raining and the wait continues.
2:35 PM local (7:05 PM IST): Toss has been officially delayed!
2:30 PM local (7 PM IST): Looks like we’re in for a delayed start due to wet surface!
2 PM local (6:30 PM IST): Hello and a warm welcome to Sportskeeda’s live coverage of the 1st T20I between Ireland and West Indies, coming to you from Bready!
West Indies arrive here looking to reset after a tough series against England where they suffered a whitewash. They’ll be determined to set the tone early in this three-match series but will know they can’t afford to take this spirited Ireland side lightly. Ireland have the firepower and depth to challenge any opposition in this format, and at home, they’ll back themselves to make a strong statement.
Having last featured against Zimbabwe, Ireland will be eager to build momentum, sharpen their T20 credentials, and show the world the strides they've made in the shortest format.
Everything is set up for an intriguing contest as both teams look to lay down a marker.
This is Pradeep, and I’ll soon be joined by my co-commentator Arya as we bring you every ball, boundary, and breakthrough from this opening clash. Stay tuned for toss and playing XI updates!
Less than 48 hours after suffering a 3-0 sweep in England, the West Indies have jetted back to Irish shores for a three-match T20I series that marks the final chapter of their sojourn of the United Kingdom.
It all began with a one-day rubber against Ireland last month with the spoils shared 1-1, following which a tough run in England saw them lose all six matches at the hands of Harry Brook and Co. Amidst it all, Nicholas Pooran, who was rested from this tour, announced his shock international retirement, throwing a spanner into the works of the Windies' plans for the T20 World Cup next year.
Picking up a win would be a good way to put things on track, for starters. The West Indies simply love playing the shortest format, of that there is little doubt. They will also take heart from the fact that the venues of next year's T20 World Cup - Sri Lanka and India - are where they tasted glory in 2012 and 2016 respectively.
But for new skipper Shai Hope, now's the time for the team to make a move and build towards that World Cup. Individually, the West Indies are blessed with a plethora of match-winners. It's often the lack of cohesion that has worn them down and once again, that is what will dictate how far they progress as a unit.
From the squad that played England, Brandon King and new Test skipper Roston Chase have flown back home to prepare for the Australian challenge that beckons later in the month. Sherfane Rutherford, Hope's deputy for this series, returned nine runs across three innings against England and will be desperate to light up the stage this evening. Evin Lewis and Johnson Charles, meanwhile, will be eager to put together something cohesive and get the team off to a flyer.
Former skipper Rovman Powell, Rutherford, Shimron Hetmyer and Hope are all match-winners while Jason Holder and Romario Shepherd combine to lend plenty of all-round firepower. Having shipped 248 runs in the last game in England though, the West Indies need a solution for their bowling woes. Alzarri Joseph was taken to the cleaners and given the short turnaround between games, he might just get a break in any case with Matthew Forde in with a shot at getting a look-in. With no match-winning wrist-spinner in their ranks, the West Indies need Akeal Hosein and Gudakesh Motie to fire at their very best too.
For all the promise and match-winning prowess in their ranks, Ireland have flattered to deceive in the T20 format themselves in recent times. Their run in last year's T20 World Cup wasn't the most impressive while their most recent outing in the format saw them succumb to Zimbabwe in their own backyard in February. Having put up a solid showing against the West Indies in the one-dayers though, they will look to ride on that and take the early initiative in the series.
All-rounder Curtis Campher continues to recover from a fractured finger and while his absence is a body blow to the hosts, they continue to have the services of familiar faces in Lorcan Tucker, Harry Tector, George Dockrell and skipper Paul Stirling in the batting department. Opener Ross Adair can run away with the game on his day while Tim Tector could be in line to feature as well.
The bowling department does not feature the injured Craig Young while Josh Little is also a late withdrawal owing to a niggle he picked up in the lead-up to this series. Graham Hume has been summoned as a replacement while Mark Adair is set to lead the pace attack alongside Barry McCarthy. Liam McCarthy, who debuted in the ODIs, could be in line to receive his T20 cap too while Matthew Humphreys is set to slot in as the frontline spinner. Leg-spinner Ben White remains an option as well should the hosts look in that direction.
By virtue of superior international pedigree, the West Indies begin this series as slight favorites. But they are the ones desperate for a win too on the back of a poor outing in England and in that regard, they're the ones under the pump. That's something Ireland would do well to take advantage of and should they do so, this could go neck and neck.
Either way, expect plenty of entertainment and surprises too along the way. Both teams are missing some key players but therein lies the opportunity for some of the others to put their hand up. In what is a tightly-crammed series, there should be plenty of takeaways for either side by the end of it all. And it surely ought to be a fascinating series in front of us!
