It turned out to be a comprehensive and comfortable win in the end for Perth Scorchers but believe us, the ride was far from it. The manner in which Joe Clarke and debutant Thomas Rogers went about flaying the bowlers to all corners of the park put the Stars well and truly in front. Rogers hadn't played a top-level game of cricket heading into this contest but jeez, he looked the part alright! He's surely one to watch out for and heads out of this game as one of the Stars' biggest takeaways.

The Scorchers attack was insipid for large parts of the first half and it took a brilliant over from Andrew Tye to send Clarke back after his third consecutive half-century of the competition. The Bash Boost point was sealed and along the way, Rogers was prized out by Peter Hatzoglou to restore parity into the contest again. Once Hatzoglou castled Stars skipper Glenn Maxwell though, the writing was pretty much on the wall.

Hilton Cartwright put a couple away to the fence and looked in flamboyant touch but the Scorchers continued to slip in a few tidy over to get the asking rate on the rise. Cartwright's wicket was the final nail in the coffin and thereafter, it was just a procession. Charlie Wakim struggled to get his innings going but he can't really be blamed - if anything, the Stars would be indebted to him for having taken a flight out of Tasmania this morning to get to the game. The result was always going to be a foregone conclusion beyond a point and a chaotic run out in the 19th over summed up the difficult times that the Stars have had to endure.

That said, one must doff their hat off to the Stars, Cricket Australia and the health officials involved with the smooth running of the competition. One really wondered if the Stars could even put out an XI today but they did and they would be highly indebted to the players who turned up at such a short notice. They will be hoping that some of their big names return soon and they can get their campaign back on track but if anything, their fighting spirit that was on display today will augur really well in keeping the spirits high in the Stars' camp.

Peter Hatzoglou (Player Of The Match): I was surely not expecting the award, thanks to whoever nominated me. I am glad to be a part of the team, I am well supported and guided by Agar and the others and I hope that we can make it to the finals. I have played some cricket in Melbourne and I was aware of their changes. It is such a pleasant atmosphere I have practiced here pre-season as well so it is good to be back here and play. Maxwell is surely a big wicket and I'm glad that I got him and the senior players were there to chat me through it to build confidence. My dad called a couple of weeks back and said that gilly's kids are copying him in the background.

That'll be all! It has taken the Scorchers very little time post the mainstays' departure and they've wrapped up yet another resounding victory. Perth Scorchers beat Melbourne Stars by 50 runs!
