That brings us to the end of our cricketing coverage for the day. It's a new day already, and we have a couple of international matches lined up for you. Keep an eye on our tabs to follow our coverage for the same! This is Rajarshi, signing off on behalf of myself and Lavil. Good night!
Shai Hope, West Indies captain and Player Of The Match: I actually forgot how difficult a 50-over game was. I haven't played since August. Good game in the end! Temba played a brilliant innings. Catches win matches. We put ourselves under pressure in the back end. That's how it goes at times. Just nice to see that we could pull out the victory at the end. We cannot control what happened a couple of weeks ago. it's important to focus on what's ahead of us. I thought it was a difficult pitch to start on, batsmen coming in found it challenging. We got a decent score in the end. You have to play the situation well. For us, soaking the pressure was key, especially when we lost Pooran. I thought I played the situation pretty well, credit my batting partners as well. The way that they were going, we needed to take wickets. Nice to see Alzarri come back after that start that he had. It's not about how you start, it's about how you finish. Akeal is doing what he does best. Great start to the series.
Shai Hope is the Player Of The Match
Temba Bavuma (South Africa captain): Lungi was a good partner. We discussed that he will keep his head and I will keep mine because you never know what can happen. It wasn't a clinical performance, we could've restricted them to a total closer to 300 and then chased it down. This is a good experience for all of them and a good place to learn. I said to Lungi that if we get some runs here we can put them under pressure. Nortje won't be available for the 3rd ODI while Aiden, Miller, and Klassen will come back.
Buffalo Park will remember this game for ages! The outcome didn't go in favour of the hosts, but the skipper, Temba Bavuma, fought tooth and nail as he started to lose out on support. From being at a commanding position in the run-chase, South Africa found themselves staring down the barrel after all of their middle order batters failed to capitalize on the starts that they got. The Proteas middle order did lack experience today, and that turned out to be a bane for them.
Before we saw Bavuma tear into the bowling, it was the left-handed Quinton de Kock who teed off first, providing South Africa with a dream start. The wicket-keeper produced an exhibition of clean-hitting, particularly against West Indies' premier fast bowlers, and soon after, the 50-run stand for the opening wicket was brought up. De Kock didn't spare anything that landed in his arc or had width in it - everything either crashed into the ropes or fell deep in the banks. Bavuma was content in playing second fiddle as South Africa were flying through at 8 an over in the powerplay.
A leg cutter from Kyle Mayers saw the back of Quinton de Kock with an over left in the powerplay. Bavuma then went on to shift gears. He took over from where de Kock left off, and the mauling of the West Indies bowlers continued. Sadly for the Proteas, none of Ryan Rickelton, Tony de Zorzi or Rassie van der Dussen were able to capitalize on the starts that they got. Rickelton and de Zorzi had a great opportunity to capitalize on their ODI debuts, but both fell at the wrong time.
The wickets continued to tumble as Bavuma fought along, proceeding to complete a memorable hundred. He was battling cramps throughout his innings, but that didn't deter him from his focus. Lungi Ngidi was the one who went on to provide him with the best support from the South African batting line up. Batting at 10, Ngidi was confident against both the pace of Alzarri Joseph and the spin of Akeal Hosein, thumping the latter for a towering six as well. Things were starting to look up for South Africa as the target came down to the 50s with the required rate well under 6, when Bavuma gloved one off Joseph to the keeper. Two balls later, it was all over after Joseph got Shamsi to nick behind as well.
It's Alzarri Joseph who mops things up in the end! South Africa were looking very good to break all records and chase this down, but their middle order let them down! Bavuma fought a lone battle, and as it turned out, a lost battle! West Indies go 1-0 up in the series!
41.4 Alzarri Joseph to Tabraiz Shamsi, GONE! WEST INDIES WIN! Length delivery outside the off stump, Shamsi looked to drive that one away but the ball takes a thickish outside edge and settles into Shai Hope's gloves. End of the 2nd ODI as West Indies win by 48 runs and take an unassailable 1-0 lead in the three-match series
Tabraiz Shamsi c Shai Hope b Alzarri Joseph 0 (2b 0x4 0x6)
41.3 Alzarri Joseph to Tabraiz Shamsi, short from Joseph. Shamshi takes his eyes off that one and lets it go through to the keeper. No run
Tabraiz Shamsi, RHB, comes to the crease
A heartbreaking sight for all South African supporters as Temba Bavuma walks back with his hand on his head. It was a really tame end to what has been a top, top knock from the Proteas captain.
41.2 Alzarri Joseph to Temba Bavuma, GONE! BAVUMA IS DISMISSED! Short ball from Joseph, Bavuma looked to pull that one away but gets a glove on that and Shai Hope takes a wonderful catch. End of a fabulous, fighting knock from Bavuma, who will be disappointed not leading his side to a win
Temba Bavuma c Shai Hope b Alzarri Joseph 144 (118 11x4 7x6)
41.1 Alzarri Joseph to Lungi Ngidi, back of a length delivery outside off. Ngidi plays that one towards third man and picks up a single
Mayers hasn't found much swing today. Ngidi, facing most of the bowling in that over, was rather comfortable facing him. He's now played 22 deliveries and hasn't looked too uncomfortable at any stage.
