Commentary

It's time for Charith Asalanka to recieve the trophy and he hands it over to his players. Time for the players to pose for the photographs. That also brings us to the end of our coverage for this encounter. It was an exciting series and Sri Lanka continues their dominant run at home. Charith Asalanka is the Player of the series and also the winning captain, here is what he had to say: Ofcourse I am very pleased with my personal performance. The team also played brilliantly. I am the No 5 batter in the team and basically when I go to bat I am not the captain. I am handling the situation which is the main thing I want to do. I think main thing is momentum is on our side. Some areas where we need to work on. Hopefully we can go with a similar line up for the next series.

Shai Hope, West Indies captain: Very big job for us. At the coin toss, I said we had something to play for today, we didn't have our best game on the field, but the way we batted, very happy with the performance today. Most teams don't come to Sri Lanka and beat them on home soil, plenty of positives, definitely have to take the learnings from it. Very happy to see the guys finish on a high note. He's (Lewis) an amazing player, great to see him bat. He's been out for quite some time, he came back and came out from where he left off. Hope he can take that form in the next series. We all can agree the West Indies play the shorter format better. Evin Lewis is a natural striker of the ball, great to see how he's playing right now. If he can prolong this form as long as he can we'll have a great start at the top. We got to take the positives, we've been playing good cricket. Need to be more consistent, this game will give us confidence going into the England series.

So West Indies have finally managed to win their first ODI in this calendar year and finish the series off with a hard-fought win against Sri Lanka in the third and final ODI at Pallekele. West Indies loves playing T20 cricket and when the match was reduced to 23 overs, it was always going to be West Indies who would have had the upper hand in the game. Kusal Mendis and Pathum Nissanka provided the impetus since the rain break but the target didn't prove to be enough in the end. West Indies needed 195 runs to win from 23 overs.

Evin Lewis and Brandon King came out to open the innings. The Sri Lankan bowlers started off brilliantly and despite not picking a wicket, they managed to restrict Sri Lanka to just 35 in the first five overs. However with all 10 wickets in hand, it was only a matter of time before West Indies turned it around. King departed at the hands of Avishkar Fernando who was at his lethal best for the major part of the game.

Out came Shai Hope in the middle to join Evin Lewis and the duo started stitching a good partnership without taking undue risks. Hope was a bit circumspect in his approach but Lewis who was playing an ODI after 2021 played an astonishing knock to keep his team in the hunt. He kept finding the boundaries pretty consistently and used the depth of the crease brilliantly.

The duo shared a 72 run stand which eventually ended when Shai Hope mistimed an attempted pull straight down the throat of the deep square leg fielder. Sherfane Rutherford was promoted up the order especially due to his experience. He took the Bulls by the horns and changed the complexion of the game with some powerful hits. He struck some astonishing shots to reduce the required rate.

He collected 18 runs from Maheesh Theekshana’s final over which tilted the game in favour of West Indies. He went onto score yet another ODI fifty and decided the fate of the game with his lusty power hitting. Evin Lewis eventually went onto reach a well-deserved century in the penultimate over as he smashed a straight six to take West Indies over the finish line with an over to spare.

Evin Lewis smashes a six down the ground to complete his century and also take his side over the finish line. This was their 6th ODI in 2024 and they have finally managed to get one over Sri Lanka. Evin Lewis showed a lot of character despite all the cramps. This is also their first ODI win in Sri Lanka since 2005 after 10 losses on a trot.

An immensely spirited knock from the opener - he had to deal with the pain of a rolled ankle but pulled through - thanks to some solid support from Sherfane Rutherford as well!

It has been a top class knock from Sherfane Rutherford. Just when his team needed, this man has delivered. The efforts of the last two matches went in vain but this should certainly be for a winning cause.
